Quote from: madbadger on November 11, 2023, 03:40:10 PMHe's an intriguing player but he's already torn his ACL twice. Let someone else take that gamble in the first round.
That's just it, I don't think he's going in the 1st round.

Quote from: T200 on November 09, 2023, 12:31:21 PMDaniel Jones will be fine after football.

His career with the Giants is all but over. Hopefully this fiasco will serve as notice to Mara that he needs to let the football people do football things. He just needs to sign the checks.
Let's hope you're right. He hasn't shown any willingness to stop meddling as long as he's been in control.

None.

I'd rather have odds on a straight up bet.

If we're going down...let's go down!!

Our only prayer is  offense protecting the ball and defense having a game for the ages.

Let us pray.

Big Blue Huddle / Eli the IRONMAN

Quote from: Woody on November 08, 2023, 03:58:12 PMYou are right with Eli And not missing games.....but if he was still playing  he would not be effective in today's game.
Eli never ran unless he absolutely had to .
He would take sacks all the time.... Except when he was in prime and Super Bowl years....he knew how to take a hit.
Todays QBs are mobile run many many times to keep plus alive.
Eli was not quick or close to being fast....thus took many sacks and knew how to go down with a hit.
Eli was very good but the game is evolving quickly into a speed game on both sides of the ball.
Not sure how he would do these days.

Another reason I have little interest in "todays game"

I was simply referring to the current credo... smart, tough, dependable.

Eli was all of that...and it doesn't appear as though we will ever have a QB we could depend on like him again.

Big Blue Huddle / Daniel Jones’ future.
November 08, 2023, 02:54:17 PM
Where do you see him by next years' trading deadline? Is he movable at that point? Or is it necessary to keep him through the end of next season due to cap implications.

I remember reading that Washington wanted him bad in the draft. Is the word out across the league that he's not a starting NFL QB? Or is there a Washington out there?

A lot of sentiment that he will start opening day for us with his newly drafted successor waiting in the wings.

We've never seen DJ compete for his job at this level. Does that even make a difference at this point?

Interested in when and how this chapter ends.

Is there a QB out there who isn't Maye or Williams, worthy of #4 overall?

I guess I'm just surprised in general that Wentz is not on a 53 man roster anywhere (not just us).
At least not publicly.

Big Blue Huddle / Could Daboll be on the hot seat?!
November 07, 2023, 07:25:09 AM
Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 07, 2023, 06:51:59 AMI think it's totally fair to hold Schoen (and by extension Daboll) responsible for the Jones contract. We can't pat them on the back for good moves they have made if we're going to give them a pass on bad ones. I do think there's something to be said for (1) the lack of other great options at the time (albeit this doesn't fully get them off the hook) and (2) the fact that they built in somewhat of an escape hatch after year two. Still, even with that escape hatch, they're screwed in 2024, and they'll still have to eat some decent dead money in 2025, so it definitely hurts.

With the luxury of hindsight, the best move IMO would have been to tag Jones and see how he plays in 2023 and whether he was able to stay healthy for two years in a row instead of just the one. In no way am I suggesting today that that was obvious or easy at the time. It wasn't. Tagging him would have meant taking the full hit in 2023, and almost certainly it would have meant losing Barkley, the linchpin of the offense in 2022. Given the fact they were coming off one of the only two winning seasons in a decade plus a playoff win, it was not going to be an easy sell to play it that way, and I doubt Mara would have been supportive.

Anyway, the if-only game is kind of tiresome, as it can be applied to any team's decisions, as nobody makes every move perfectly. At least we don't have Jones on some Kyler Murray type contract. The Giants will be in a position to draft his long term replacement in the upcoming draft, and then ease that player in with Jones (or some other backup) starting the season and potentially playing a good part or even all of it.

So we can sulk and moan all we want, but the situation is what it is, and there are certain aspects of it that provide reasons to have some optimism and hope about potentially getting a big talent upgrade at the QB position.
Well respectfully, for me this isn't about sulking and more about getting out of this definition of insanity that ownership seems to continue to pull us in.

Give them hope that we're headed in the right direction by throwing a bunch of $$$ into an off-season, only to collapse again after all of the spending.

My point as the OP of this thread was to hold Daboll up as an example of what a pattern the Maras seem to be stuck in. "Don't rebuild, retool so we don't lose the fans, and oh by the way here are the untouchable players we expert decision makers dictate that you should retool around...you can do this, RIGHT?"

At least that's how it looks to me, and while I see Daboll & Schoen as two very talented football men, it's kind of difficult to show your wares with this level of meddling.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on November 06, 2023, 04:10:59 PMYeah I'm not upset with Daboll or schoen. I think they are great. You can't win without elite Qb play and I firmly believed this was going to be a complete rebuild which is why I was against the Jones and Barkley signings. We've basically missed both all season anyways. They can't coach what isn't there.
Playing Devils advocate here. Aren't Daboll and Schoen the two who ultimately made the decision to sign DJ to the extension and sign Barkley?

You say they're great which I would like to believe, but who then is held to account for the current financial predicament the franchise is in with DJs contract.

If they truly believed they were in a full rebuild, why did they spend so much $$$ this off-season?

Quote from: TDToomer on November 06, 2023, 11:28:25 AMIs there any proof that Mara has meddled into what Schoen want to do? We asked for Mara to hire from the outside and he finally gave in and did what we asked.
You don't think that Mara is the reason that DJ was given every opportunity and ultimately signed to an extension?

"We did everything we could to ruin the kid" ??

To me, strongly suggesting that they give DJ the QB which is the most important position on the team every opportunity; is a major meddle in my book.

I like Daboll, but I also like DJ.

That doesn't mean that I consider either to be the right choice to lead this franchise.

My issue with Daboll right now is the same one I have with Mara. They are not just losing games, they are unwatchable. Yesterday we were without exception the worst team in the NFL.

Mara keeps rolling this out because he believes he can hire Leaders while usurping their leadership and expect to win. He's done this so often it's become the definition of insanity.

Daboll wanted the job. It's okay to want the job, but if you want it so bad you're willing to compromise your judgement (IE DJ being fixed under him), you set yourself and everyone around you up for failure.

He's nowhere as sure of himself as he was last year, he lacks confidence, conviction and composure. If he doesn't turn this version of himself around to at least lead this team to competitiveness, I don't see how he can continue in role next year.

No matter what, it's time for Schoen to BOW UP on Mara and declare that if he wants to win, to stay the Hell out of the way and let him build the team.

It's ugly AGAIN fellow Giants fans. I'm getting to the age where I need more seasons like 2022 and less like 2018, 19, 20, 21 & 23.

Please John, get out of the way!

Is it possible that Schoen would pull the trigger should the Giants lose out?

Can Daboll salvage this by at least showing that he's learned from many of his mistakes this year, giving us some hope for next year with a new QB?

Despite how we look as a team, I believe there is some legit talent on this roster (not yet enough to contend but) so I'm not ready to move Schoen.

What of the owners? Do they intercede after this year?

When will we finally be assured that the future is in good hands?
