It shouldn't be a 15 yard penalty it should be an ejection and a one game suspension. We've seen to many dudes lose an entire season to that nonsense. For the first 90 years of the game players made tackles from behind without risking a compound fracture to the ball carrier. It's lazy and IMHO mean spirited. Knowing the injury risk to you opponent and doing it anyways shows a complete lack of respect for the opponent and the game itself.

I don't buy a single word about the NFL scouts telling him they didn't need to see him do anything on the field at his pro day. With the amount of money involved and the ramifications for drafting a bust in the top five no team is going to tell a player that they don't want any additional data points to consider.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 19, 2024, 04:01:58 PMIt also seems obvious that Mara has a great personal affinity for him, possibly because he reminds him of Eli in a lot of ways. I get it - he likes the polite, preppy, clean-cut, aw shucks, southern gentleman from a nice family thing, but they're two completely different players, and this is the part that seems lost on him.

I'm sure Mara really appreciates these personal qualities that harken back to the athletes of yesteryear versus the entitled, diva'd out, drama queens and thugs of today. I get all that. The problem is your objective needs to be doing everything you can to win games in the most competitive sports league in the country and probably the world. That should be the guiding principle, not trying to find a husband for your granddaughter or a nice kid to be a summer intern in your office for a couple months. This is serious stuff here.

In my previous professional life I had to fire a man I liked and respected because of repeated performance issues. It sucked and I felt awful about it for a long time but I had an obligation to the other members of my team to nit make their lives miserable because they had to carry a guy who wasn't pulling his weight. You can like, respect and admire another human while simultaneously holding them to a standard. For the life of me ai don't understand why Mara will desperately hold on to Jones but he was quick to fire Coughlin. If anyone in the history of the franchise that earned the right to have a couple bad years it was Coughlin.

As a coach you lose moral authority with your players when you anoint a guy as the starter when his play hasn't earned that level of respect. There isn't a single guy in the locker room that wants a repeat of last year.

What has Jones shown thus far in has career that the staff and front office are united that it's job? The guy has thrown for more than 15 touchdowns in a season once in his career and that was his rookie season. The love they show him is grotesquely disproportionate to his impact on the field. IMHO it's a sign of a toxic culture that starts with the owner and works its was down through every aspect of the organization.

The difference in value between a starting tackle and a starting guard on a second contract is millions. In fairness to him he's only had a year and a half of playing time, all of that under an incompetent offensive line coach. It took Thomas three years to become a pro bowl caliber tackle. I suspect that he isn't going to take it well and they're trying to create a soft landing by reaching out to his team.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 16, 2024, 08:11:26 PMOn 60 Minutes when he was coaching Notre Dame, he claimed he was the best coach in the country, and it was clear he believed that. It was nothing but downhill after that.

He was the first of many former Belichek assistants who confused Bill's genius with their own.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on March 16, 2024, 07:02:49 PMI will check out your link in a bit. Madbadger, where do you think Nix will be available in round 1?

I don't see him getting much past 20 tbh.

Quote from: Gman329 on March 16, 2024, 08:39:13 AMOff topic here but Charlie Weiss is absolutely the worst listen on Sirius NFL Radio.  Talks a lot, says nothing.

Sounds a lot like his tenure as a head coach. Always blustering about how teams will be at a schematic disadvantage against him before looking like a team coached by a third grader.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on March 16, 2024, 04:07:04 PMWhat makes you say that what it is it about these three quarterbacks...... that makes you think they would be unsuccessful in the NFL I'm curious.

There's no guarantee the top quarterbacks in this draft would be successful. I'm just curious why you're so down on the three mentioned ?

I get that people have personal preferences but they tend to be grossly ill-informed. The link I provided was to a YouTube channel run by a former NFL quarterback who spent half an hour breaking down the top six guys using the all 22 film. He goes into the scheme, the quarterbacks reads based on the scheme and what defense the opponent is in at the time. After watching all six he spent more time praising Nix's ability to read the defense and deliver an accurate ball than any of the other five. He also broke down how Oregon's receivers routinely screwed him by dropping the ball or by running sloppy lazy routes. He also said that Maye is unlikely to be ready to compete day one because of a bunch of fundamental flaws that will kill him in the NFL.

It's well worth the time to watch whichever quarterback you favor to get a sense of what that player does well and what he really needs to work on. Personally I have never seen a better resource available to evaluate a quarterback prospect. Sure as hell beats the tired "he came up small in the Pac 12 title game and therefore sucks" evaluation we see here every year.

None of the above. If none of the top four are available at 6 than I'd take Nabers or Harrison and then try and move up into the later half of the first round to draft Bo Nix.

I don't think Schoen is done addressing the line yet. I wouldn't be surprised if he used our 4th round pick on a guy who can play guard or center. One name I'll throw out there is Wisconsin G/C Tanor Bortolini. He was an outstanding guard that was forced to convert to center last year due to injuries and transfers. He did a solid job at center but IMHO he could beat out Ezudu by the end of camp. He's also a freak athlete and we all know that Schoen loves guys with absurd RAS.

There's a bubble right now that has to work its way through the system. Guys who would have headed to the NFL with a year or two of eligibility now have a financial reason to stick around but at the end of the day they have five years to play four and the only guys who get a 6th year is a guy with two significant injuries which makes their draft value next to nil. Three years from now it will be business as usual and I can't see it affecting the next collective bargaining as college players don't get a say in it and NFL vets aren't going to go to war for someone who isn't a dues paying member of the union.

This signing doesn't even move the needle for me, even a little bit. It also makes me wonder if they are going to take a quarterback in this draft. Strange move IMHO.

One major upgrade at the edge, two upgrades along the offensive line and a clear downgrades at running back and safety.
