Quote from: Philosophers on January 27, 2024, 09:37:10 AM20 was just a random number with no science behind it on my part.  It can be 15.  The point is just move back some to get more picks then go solve the QB problem and get other positions solved.  With my idea, I didnt even use the picks I'd get from that trade yet.

If you are going to move down a significant amount with the idea of drafting a QB, like @DaveBrown74 suggested, you need to have more than one player targetted.  So a calculated risk might make sense if you have 3 QB prospects you like, but to move that far with only one target in mind creates a huge risk with minimal (compared to the risk) reward.

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on January 26, 2024, 08:50:14 PMWas the interview denied prior to the new coach being hired and then the release occurred after the hiring? Because that would make sense: they didn't want to lose him if the new coach wanted him and kept him around to let the new head coach decide.

Do you think potential coaching candidates don't notice things like this?

Quote from: Ed Vette on January 27, 2024, 07:47:00 AMHe needs therapy or anger management. The Giants should hire a psychologist or psychiatrist or an AM counselor. He's been in the league 24 years and it took 22 years to become a HC and some here asked why. Its baggage. Same with Eric Bieniemy. They have a reputation that holds them back. Maybe he sees the players as his children, and that's why he hasn't lost the locker room.

The Giants already have one on staff

Lani Lawrence, PsyD- Director of Wellness and Clinical Services, Player Engagement

Nohelani (Lani) Lawrence, Psy.D., is the Director of Wellness and Clinical Services for the New York Football Giants. Prior to joining the Giants, Dr. Lani was a clinical and sport psychologist at the University of Southern California. Her background in both sport and clinical psychology has led to a unique perspective regarding the concerns of student-athletes. At SC she provides performance enhancement training and mental health support to 21 elite NCAA Division-I teams, including men's and women's basketball, track & field, and swimming. She is a licensed psychologist in the State of California and New Jersey, and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

As an adjunct professor for the USC Freshman Seminar: Foundations of Self for Women of Color, her course examined the complex experience of being a woman of color within collegiate athletics. She has given several domestic and international presentations on the unique challenges faced by LGBT student-athletes such as the coming-out process and multiple-minority identity. Dr. Lani is active in several professional organizations including American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. She was elected as the inaugural Membership Service Division Head of AASP's Executive Board (2017-2020).

She has earned a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from the University of Denver and went on to complete both her pre-doctoral and post-doctoral internship at USC's Student Counseling Services. Previously, she received her Ed.M. in Counseling Psychology, with emphasis in Sport Psychology from Boston University and B.S. in Psychology from Northeastern University.

Quote"I talked to people that knew there were issues in Cleveland, when he was an offensive coordinator there. The same volatility and heatedness in Cleveland," Hughes said. "Remember, Daboll went through several coaching cycles before he got his job. There were some of those issues that were turned up in those coaching cycles and coaching interviews, and they wanted him to address those. And he didn't address them overly well in some of those interviews, which is why those teams passed on him despite his success in Buffalo."

Hughes went on to note that this is something that could continue to "deteriorate" and it may result in offensive coordinator Mike Kafka attempting to leave for a lateral move (if he's not hired as a head coach).

"There's not a zero percent chance that he takes a lateral move. That's not completely incomprehensible — that's still a situation that could be out there," Hughes said. "When you have a coach that loses all three coordinators and maybe two of which because they don't want to work with him anymore, that's a red flag."

Quote from: Rosehill Jimmy on January 26, 2024, 08:51:47 PMSurprise surprise...Raanan with another take from his Soap Opera Digest files

In fairness, these comments were at the end of his podcast and were not advertised.   Raanan was addressing the possibility of Belichick coming to the Giants as a coach.  He said people have come to him with the reports that Belichick is not happy with the way the Giants run now.  Raanan suggested it had to do with the family being involved in running the team, a break from how things were run when he was with NYG and Wellington was in charge

I just listened to Raanan's latest podcast.   He said he heard Belichick has told people he is not thrilled with the way the Giants are run these days.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on January 26, 2024, 03:42:31 PMThe below excerpt on Penix is less than ideal.

In the back half of the season, Penix showed some accuracy issues, with many easy would-be completions being lost to passes off the mark. Penix needs to improve his accuracy and mechanics, plus his footwork will need development for the pros. However, there is talk that Penix was playing hurt in the back half of 2023, which impacted his accuracy. Sources with NFL teams said that vision is a problem for Penix, who either doesn't read the coverage or pre-determines his throws and pushes them into coverage regardless of whether his receiver is open. Penix demonstrates some decision-making issues when teams drop seven or eight and rush him with only four or three defenders.

As @Ed Vette said, all the QBs have at least some warts.  That's why I started the thread about QB traits. What traits we value determines which QBs we will like and which we will be less enthusiastic about.

Quote from: Bob In PA on January 26, 2024, 01:59:44 PMEd: If you didn't read everything, I made the argument somewhere above that people misinterpreted his statement. I still DO agree with your "lanes" argument, but my point still holds true.  IMO, he was not throwing Jones under the bus by showing support for a player he believes deserved higher priority than Jones. He said nothing against (or about) Jones. Bob

Regardless if he was supporting Barkley or attacking Jones, players should avoid discussing contracts and other GM details.   It's more than fine to say you hope a player returns, but you clearly are leaving your lane when you discuss the merits of your GM's decisions or decisions to be.

Quote from: Bob In PA on January 26, 2024, 02:15:27 PMRich: I remember, but that doesn't mean he'd consider using his 1st-round pick on a QB, except as I already said (if the "right QB" falls to the him - assuming there IS such a guy - it would be foolish to pass him up). Bob

Bob,

Regardless if the QB is round one or later or a free agent, we will still consider traits as we evaluate the acquisition.

Quote from: katkavage on January 26, 2024, 02:08:44 PMI agree, that is the face of QB hell we could be in for a long time.

Sadly, that didn't need to be the case; we saw our division rival (the Commanders) ensure they wouldn't be stuck in that hell (by trading away their two staring Edge rushers, they didn't plan on re-signing).

Quote from: squibber on January 26, 2024, 12:29:00 PMI'm really upset by the firing of my boss today. He was the Director of Dining Operations at a local University.  He patiently waited in the wings for the Director job for several years and he got his promotion last year.

We use an outside food service contractor to manage the dining program as far as ordering food, supplies and managing the University's union workers. The food contractor onsite managers were not pleased with the promotion because my boss is unhappy with their performance and felt they overcharge the school on food and supplies. My boss did some digging to find replacement vendors for the near future. I will call the current company Company X.

Company X knows my boss is a bit of a jokester and says things to get a laugh. Company X knows that.  They came up with a plan to save their jobs. They filed a harrassment greivance with the school's Office of Equity and Inclusion stating my boss made them uncomfortable. I was present at two of the incidents as well as a Company X manager so I was interviewed by an investigator.

They were friendly digs aimed at me. They were benign. Nothing bad. We do that at each other. When my boss made those two jokes, I laughed and was not offended at all. During the interview I told them I was not offended in the least. I received an email 4 months ago from the investigator that the case is now closed.  My boss told me that his boss is on his side and he knows what Company X managers on campus are trying to pull.

Well this morning two security guards escorted him off the campus for good. His career and reputation may be over. I can't believe the school and the Office of Equity and Inclusion came to this decision. Are they trying to make an example of my boss? I don't know. Are they without courage? I don't know.  The threshold for dismissal should be much higher than this.

Times have changed.  Managers need to be extremely careful in terms of what they say and who they say it to (as well as who hears what they say).  Unless you really trust everyone present, it's best to avoid humor that involves digs, regardless of the targets.  I would have to say (admittedly with only the limited details you provided) that he was ill-advised to be joking in meetings with the venders, especially as he had made it known to them he was unhappy with them and was looking to replace them.   In situations like that, it's wise to stick to only business dealings with them.

Quote from: Fletch on January 26, 2024, 01:33:00 PMIt is like I am in the twilight zone when it comes to Giants fans and Daniel Jones. I cannot think of one player in my sports watching lifetime -- IN ANY SPORT-- where there was such a dedication to a player who so clearly sucks.

Fletch, in your case, comments like this one remind me of how you said you admired Aaron Rodgers more because he lied and slandered another person.  That sort of drove home to me what your values are and so I guess I shouldn't be surprised by these intellectually dishonest comments.

I can't help but notice you don't see people being accused of being Jones haters, but it is not uncommon that we see some variation of the "Jones lover" attack.  I guess one side values intellectual honesty and critical thinking more than the other side. ;)
