Hoge's entire discussion on Maye and other QB prospects is here.  The quotes were a bit out of context compared to his actual discussion

Joe Schoen knows people are assuming the Giants will draft a QB at No. 6 but insists the team has other needs, which leads Mike Florio and Chris Simms to evaluate how New York will play it.

I would be unhappy.  The Giants already have very good left tackle.  After that, the contribution to victory between an elite lineman and a solid lineman does not justify using such a high draft pick, in my opinion.

we could have drafted this guy one pick before instead of Jones!

The salaries have nothing to do with inflation.  They are 48.5% of NFL revenue.  The increases are the result of the owners bleeding the fans dry with pay-per-view (being forced to subscribe to service) excessive night games, and other profit-making measures (which generally make the game worse)

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 11, 2024, 08:11:02 AMThis was a pretty good interview by John Schmeelk of Kurt Warner. A few comments and thoughts.

I respect Warner not just for his knowledge but for the kind of man he is. I remember the day in Albany at Camp where I saw him signing autographs for so many children until there were no more to sign.

I always felt he was pulled too soon that season but we all knew it was Eli's time. I felt the team would have definitely faired better that year if Warner had finished the season. Eli got his ass kicked the remainder of 2004. Fortunately it didn't break him but made him stronger.

Warner was criticized for holding the ball too long. I remember all the articles timing his release. It was a new and different system and perhaps he was in a different approach to the reads. In the interview he credited himself with being one of the best at reading Defenses and routes, and perhaps that season helped him toward his future successes. I always wondered what would have been if Eli wasn't drafted and Kurt Warner was the Giants QB in the Coughlin years.

I think that Kurt is looking at this draft class through the eyes of what he did best and I know I'll get some groans here, but he was way too harsh on Drake Maye. He failed to see all the good things he did on the field that quite frankly, Bobby Skinner pointed out. Bobby was very objective and it wasn't all roses, but he hit in his reads, the ability to move within the pocket, make incredible throws in tight windows with anticipation, throws outside the numbers in a system that didn't try to attack the middle of the field, escape pressure to make throws downfield and not check-downs while taking hits, and gaining yards with his legs when there was nothing there. Yes, Maye bounces a lot and I don't see that being eliminated completely but guess what HOF QB bounced a lot before delivery? Peyton Manning. And although Manning has a sweet Mickey Mantle swing with a beautiful delivery but he didn't have the arm that Maye has. It's not going to hurt him at the next level. He does it to keep himself in his toes to move within the pocket and avoid pressure and that's going to help him at the next level.

That said, Maye has to cut down on those wtf passes, but with the exception of one game, it's way overblown. That can be corrected.

Ed,

What Maye does well will not be all that important if he doesn't improve his consistency.  A QB who misses too many routine throws in the NFL will find themselves in 2nd and 3rd and long and often having to punt the ball away because those misses will put the offense behind schedule.

I don't know if Maye can clean up his flaws (that many evaluators have gone over).  If he can, he has the potential to be a good NFL QB; if he doesn't, he will end up being a backup QB in this league.

The book on JMS, when he was drafted, stated that he was an older prospect who was a high-floor/lower-ceiling type.   His play last season was disappointing.  I agree with @londonblue. What sort of player he ultimately becomes is to be determined.

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on April 10, 2024, 07:13:58 PMWhy would I? QB is the most important position on the field and Mahomes is a generational superstar. This was a thread about QBs. The other comment mentioned Reid's ability with QBs and I was identifying that the primary reason he has such a reputation is Mahomes.

I bring that up because I believe the conventional wisdom is that quarterbacks are given too much credit for victories and defeats.  While QB is the most important position on the field, it's just a single position on a team with 22 starters (and more on special teams and key subs).

Reid's ability to coach up QBs is generationally great, Reid was enjoying success before he ever met Mahommes

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 10, 2024, 04:39:05 PMPay the price, we've seen over and over that you can build good teams with out 1st rd picks. The 49ers weren't phased by the multiple 1sts they paid for trey Lance much less all they used to get Mccarthy.

That and the Rams won a super bowl with no 1st rd picks for a decade.

You either have a qb or you don't, you have to get the guy if you think he is a guy.

You can also end up like the Jags and the Chargers where you supposedly have your QB and still not win

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on April 10, 2024, 05:15:09 PMDespite being the "best QB friendly head coach" in 30 years (in your estimation), Reid never won the Superbowl until he had Mahomes. His reputation when he left Philly was a coach who could not win the big one, despite very talented squads (recall the putative "Dream Team"). Mahomes has done a ton for Reid's legacy. My statements also do not imply anything other than Reid is a very good coach.

You could also point out that Reid never won a Super Bowl without Steve Spagnoluo as his DC or Travis Kelcy as his TE

Quote from: ozzie on April 10, 2024, 02:26:11 PMI agree that QB is without a doubt, the most important position on the team. I don't, however, think that you need to have an "Elite" QB to be successful.
Everyone wants a "Mahomes", but let's face it, that's not gonna happen. If you can get one, by all means, go get him, but I think Rich's list proved you can be successful without the best of the best at QB.
I believe building a good, solid, all around team with a solid QB is a more sustainable way to be consistently good, than an having an elite QB with less that average players around him.
I also think that teams do both themselves and the QB's a disservice by not being patient enough with them and letting them develop.
So, my answer to the original question is, No, I don't think there is a shortage of QB's, I think there are too many teams looking for short-cuts to success and believing you have to have an "Elite" QB to win.

I think you said it better than I did.   =D>
