Big Blue Huddle / Re: Sacks allowed
December 19, 2023, 11:04:32 AM
Through 14 games, the Giants have given up a franchise-record 76 sacks. Its QBs have been sacked at least seven times in six games this season. They are the third-most sacked team in NFL history, two sacks shy of the second-most. However, while 2 of their last 3 games are against a certain to be ticked-off Eagles, it seems unlikely that they will give up a further 28 sacks to tie the NFL's all time record of 104 set by none other than the 1986 Eagles.

Small consolation in being only second-worst in League history, eh! And so, to repeat myself for the umptyumpth time, it won't matter bubkes or bupkus, if you prefer, who they have behind Center, if they don't significantly improve the talent/performance of the Oline which can neither pass nor run block worth a damn. If you wanna add blame for poor coaching, that's all well and good, but it ain't no excuse.  Got that now, have we? huh?

Cheers!

Quote from: miss86 on December 18, 2023, 04:35:48 PMI think the reason they didn't tag him is because I believe there would of been a ~32mil hit on the cap. They could have just let him test the market, but that was too big of a risk. They were between a rock and a hard spot. I really thought DJ was worth around 20-25mil.

Right you are. Yeah, I s'pose so.

Pleased and so proud of her, I am sure. I am myself quite impressed and inspired by your Alexis. And just to complete the circle of coincidence, I am a graduate of what was once Manhattan College Prep, right there at 242nd and Broadway. Good Luck and God Bless.

Quote from: miss86 on December 18, 2023, 12:51:30 PMDaniel Jones was my biggest disappointment. Although, I should not have been surprised. I didn't want the Giants to pay him 40Mil per season. I didn't think showed he was good enough in the passing game LY. He won mostly with his legs.

The 1st game against the Cowplops this season, I knew, just watching his face and body language that he was in panic mode from the beginning (I thought: "who could blame him with that OL"). But as the game went on, I realized he just doesn't have it. I was very disappointed with his play and command of the offense.

I'm not a 100% there yet, but you could well be right, Chris. I'm starting to wonder why Schoen/Daboll didn't just tag DJ and roll the dice with Saquon while hoping that another team wouldn't then outbid them. But so much for wisdom after the fact. Bah!

Can't let that pass without comment as it is so great to hear. I was born in the Bronx and am a Columbia grad - BS/MS Chem/Chem Eng, and only slightly later than Alexander Hamilton.

As I said earlier, Neal is also my answer. But let's not forget- as we are so willing and able to do- that we were quite pleased and on board when Schoen/Daboll chose him with the 7th overall. Indeed, there were some here who were surprised that they didn't grab Neal with their No.5. Of course, our only real skill in such matters is in second-guessing.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: DeVito to start again XMas Day
December 18, 2023, 11:49:56 AM
Why not? They won't be tied to Tyrod after the next and final 3 games. They might just as well find out what DeVito may be worth next year as either a 2 or 3 if they even decide to keep 3.

The only certainty is that DJ's cap costs (live or dead) will make him the nominal Num Uno assuming he's ready to go next Spring. And if not, there is no point or basis for us to now start WAGing about whom otherwise that may be. Right! Huh?

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Offensive Line Frustrations
December 17, 2023, 08:54:38 PM
It's known as a lack of talent in 3 of 5 positions at best- and that is when Thomas is healthy- and by no means is it, nor has it been something new where the Giants are concerned. And yet, only now does it seem that more folks may be ready to join the few of us who have been pressing the issue seemingly in vain. And by all means let's be clear, if they don't add the talent needed to significantly improve the Oline's performance, it won't matter who's calling signals at the team's "most important position".

Even though 2024 is thought to be an above average QB Draft with the likes of Williams, Maye, Nix, Daniels, and Penix seen as 1st Round value, we should never forget that the hit/success rate is rarely if ever 100% and often rather less.

It was 2018, the last time, as I recall that we had a major debate here about whom they should take as Eli's successor from among the "lead pipe" top-5 at the time: Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Rosen, and Jackson.. It also is my recollection that the consensus QB choice around here was Darnold with the notable exception of- No, not Gettleman whose head and eyes were on his assumed certain to be HOF Running Back- but rather our own Ed Vette who watched his choice, Josh Allen and the Bills beat the crap out of the Cows today.

And so, even if we later add the then 32nd pick, Lamar Jackson to the success count, I guess we'd still have to think as much about cockups as cocksure.

Back to Earth now, are we now?

Who knows whether they will use an early pick on a QB. But if they do, and for his sake, and indeed for DJ's, who assuming he's fully recovered by Spring, will be- make no mistake- the intended starter next year, they'd better do everything possible to make major improvement in the Oline.

It's hard to imagine that even after today when DeVito has thrown for all of 177 yards, 2 FGs, no TDs, been sacked 7 times, and Barkley with 9 carries for 14 yards that anyone could continue to be so blind, so unwilling to see.

You only get to start knocking Taylor for whatever reason because DeVito got his head knocked which won't be the last time. Moreover, it has been much the same for Jones having had to dink/dunk or to run because the Oline can't protect nor run block worth a damn.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on December 17, 2023, 11:46:21 AMYou can't win long term in the modern NFL with 150 pasing yards period.

You got that part right, Jess. Even your whipping boy, Daniel has had more than few games every bit as productive as that. Rather, it was DeVito's last minute comeback resilience against the Pack which should be lauded. But, of course, did we not see Jones pull a major 2H come-from-behind against the Arizonas, earlier in the year?

The only way to know whether you have the "right guy" back there, and not just potentially, is for him to prove it competitively over time which is where they are with Daniel Jones right now for sure, and not yet remotely with DeVito.

By the way, while I will root for either and both, I'm not sold on either of them.

Cheers!

Cliche as it may be, the best ability is availability. Quite obviously unavailability has come to define Darren Waller, who the Raiders traded to the Giants for that very reason, namely his having missed a total of 14 games over his previous 2 seasons. And now this year with the Giants, it's been the same old, same old. In a "what have you done for me lately" League, it has been a lost bet of nearly/ maybe not quite Gettleman proportion, I suppose, given his overall cost.

For me personally, and for now and until further notice, my biggest disappointment is 2022's 7th overall pick, Evan Neal. His failures to date have been every bit the liability or more to the Giants Offense than that of Darren Waller.

And so now, we find ourselves with half the wins of a year ago grasping at a cutlet for solace. Will it be a fulfilling menu? We ain't nowhere near an answer to that.

Cheers!

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Dumpster Dan is closed down
December 17, 2023, 11:17:55 AM
Whether or not, the impulsive among us see Chicken Cutlets now heading the menu, we may rest assured that Dan is not and never will be a Kool Aid drinker. And so, while it's not obvious what exactly he meant by "closed down" it wouldn't likely have referred to cap money as Our Heroes are, I believe, currently projected to be no worse than middle of the pack (15th/16th) and nowhere near in the red in 2024 cap money.

And that, of course, includes the $35.5 million guaranteed to Daniel Jones, next year. On the other hand, cutting DJ post-June 1st would result in a $47 million dead cap hit which then would leave them in deepest doo doo. And that my crabby friends is why, assuming he is fully recovered by next Spring, the Jones boy will begin camp as the Giants starting QB. Piss on it all you want, but that is the economic exigency which Schoen/Daboll must deal with first, and perhaps last.

As should come as no surprise to anyone here, I am not into predicting or WAGging in any form, so I will leave others to their fights of fancy, or otherwise faithless fates in regard to FA and the Draft, but whatever is to happen, it better include fixing that f**king Oline.

Cheers!

While we are on the subject of Tommy DeVito, and/or fickle and rash, I couldn't help but chuckle as I watched Aidan O'Connell- as Irish a name as exists- and the Raiders 4th Round backup to Garappolo throw 5 TD passes, 4 in the 1H alone while wondering if that wouldn't earn him the nickname, "Corned Beef" O'Donnell, if you catch my drift.  ;)

Cheers!
