Chalk Talk / Re: Day 4 of training camp
July 29, 2024, 06:57:04 AM
I'm less concerned with a few underthrows in the first few practices and far more concerned that the OL is still in flux and appears far from "fixed".  I've been saying all along, JMS at Center wasn't much better than Neal at RT but got far less attention. Now both aren't practicing and we're talking about who can move where and who can we sign.

Dammit!  Can we PLEASE get this figured out?!

The Giants are signing CB Breon Borders, who had a tryout on Friday, per source. He's appeared in 32 career games while spending time on 12 teams in his seven-year career. Those stops included Buffalo with Joe Schoen and Tennessee with Shane Bowen.

This is the corresponding move for the Nathan Rourke release.

12 teams in 7 years.  Don't we have some of that Barkley cap space available, so we can shop outside of the bargain bin?

Agreed....and I believe Robinson, especially, is ready to pop.  And Hyatt will take a step up, as well, possibly filling a Gabe Davis sort of role.

Led by "Leek", this receiving core has the potential to drive defenses crazy.  It's up to DJ and the Offensive coaching staff to realize that potential. I mean, what would Mahomes and Andy Reid do with Nabers, Robinson, Hyatt and Slayton?

I'm gonna start a poll: Would you rather see another Blues Clues post sharing his insights on Jones, Devito, et al or stick needles in your eyes?

I think it'll be pretty close.

Over 500.  Finish 9-8 and I'll feel like we're heading in the right direction.

Sounds like Nabers has the higher upside and higher risk factor.  Ain't that always the way? Still, I would have made the same pick.

Wink clearly had his own little fiefdom with his inner circle of Defensive coaches and they distanced themselves from the rest of the staff.  For instance, I read that they never ate together with the other coaches and their isolation became conspicuous for all to see.  It was a subtle, ongoing undermining of Daboll.

I see an 8-9 season, just missing the playoffs.  Still a long way from serious contention but at least a step closer. And yes, I think DJ, with a (HOPEFULLY) improved OL, a true #1 WR and solid complementary cast, will have a markedly better season.

Giants must see more in Ezeudu than I do.  If he has to play much, either at OG or OT, we're in trouble.

Ya know, I was hopeful when I first embarked on this thread, that it wouldn't become just another Daniel Jones debate....but alas!  Here we are again.

I am still very concerned that we haven't improved the OL enough to make a big difference.  Looking at the PFF scores, it seems that we signed a slightly better brand of lousy. And if Schmitz doesn't improve markedly, any improvement in the overall unit will be negligible. Just like last year, I'm more hopeful than confident.  Much more.

Quote from: sxdxca38 on May 19, 2024, 08:58:43 PMI appreciate very much what you have presented here, however, here is how I am seeing it.

I agree with you that not exercising his 5th year option was the wrong move.

However, giving him a new contract after the way he played in 2022 was definitely the right move.

The issue that I have was not the contract itself, but to me it was the size of the contract. If they were to have re-signed him in the range of around 30 million a year, then I think that is fair, but 40 million was too much.

As for your last statement, I would say it is yet to be determined, but this year we will all get our answer.

I generally agree with this but Jones would not have signed for $30M.  So would the Giants have maybe used the tag there, instead of on Barkely?

Quote from: spiderblue43 on May 16, 2024, 02:22:46 PMIt isn't worse than the Packers or Steelers, anyway. It's the 100th anniversary and it's part of their history. Roll with it.

Exactly my first reaction!

Not crazy about Thanksgiving in Dallas.....and I suspect Mrs Gman will not be happy about that, either.

Just feels like they threw a lot of mediocrity at the problem.  And the spotlight on Neal's struggles somewhat obscured the fact that Schmitz had a subpar, disappointing rookie year.  Are we so sure he'll turn the corner?
