Quote from: uconnjack8 on March 06, 2024, 08:40:51 PMHow much is McKinney projected to get if Dugger is expected to get 4 years, 53 mill worth 29 guaranteed?

Would prefer McKinney
I'm reading the nonsign of mcKinney, if it goes that way, as they want to use the big money to sign multiple OGs and or DL preferably pass rushers

Big Blue Huddle / Re: What Can WanDale Become?

Quote from: Stringer Bell on March 04, 2024, 08:25:44 PMWan'dale will never be an alpha receiver. Under any circumstances. He's a complimentary piece. And that's fine. All teams need guys like him. But I think the Lockett ceiling is a good comp and best-case scenario. And Lockett was never an alpha receiver.

I wasn't saying WanDale will be the alpha receiver.  The guy they draft at 6, whether Makik or Rome, would be the alpha receiver who would draw the coverage

Quote from: Jclayton92 on March 04, 2024, 05:07:59 PMWith the right QB he's going to explode.
A better QB would help but he will explode when the Giants have a WR who can scare a defense and has to be accounted for.  I don't think any of the wideouts scare defenses.  Hyatt may become that guy but it's not just speed; John Ross did not do that either.  If Nasir's or Rome can get off the line of scrimmage like the guy on the Jets, he's going to get double teamed and give WanDale the space he needs.  I think WanDales game will be primarily yards after the completion. And, I think it'll be serious YAC. I want to see that alpha WR we haven't had since Beckham.  As an aside, way better than Jamison if healthy

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 04, 2024, 06:26:31 PMWould you say his play last year prior to the two injuries made the Giants brass feel good about their decision to give him all that money?

Not understanding.  Does this mean they don't think JJ will be there with the6th pick ?  Or am I misunderstanding?

Big Blue Huddle / Re: No tag for Barkley
March 01, 2024, 11:43:37 AM
Maybe he overplayed his hand, maybe he didn't.  The fact that he didn't accept the Giants offer probably helps the Giants in that he probably would be on the team for the next 2 years at more than $12 million a year.  If the Giants franchised him this year, which I believe they (and he) don't want them to do, I think it's in the neighborhood of $12 m a year.

I think he's almost definitely leaving and the club that makes the most sense is Houston. They have Cap money, they are a team on the rise with a young QB on a great contract, they could use a RB and Barkley has that aura of a top RB, their OL is not bad and probably a lot better than ours, and a pointI have not seen mentioned, there is no income tax in Texas (I think).

Given Harbaugh's statements about wanting to establish a running game plus the need to keep a high priced QB heathy, I'm expecting the Chargers to draft an OT.  The Michigan ran the ball should say something about his thinking. I also don't expect the Giants to overdraft Evan Neal at least with the 1st pick this year; they'll give him time to play better and hopefully stay healthy.  It would also help if they sign a good OG in free agency to play next to him.

That said, there seems to lots of OTs and WRs in this draft that are highly rated. If the Chargers think they can find what they need in round 2 or if Schoen thinks he can find his #1 WR or QB or OT in round 2, he might gamble.  IF, on the other hand, Nabers is the second coming of Jamar Chase as some seem to think, that would be a special pick here assuming the QBs go the expected way and JJ not that high.  Maybe a trade back?

Quote from: ozzie on February 28, 2024, 08:56:25 AMWhether they want to admit it or not, the Giants are in a rebuild. I want to see improvement, but in reality, I don't expect to see it in leaps and bounds. I think Schoen has the potential to be a good, solid GM and I imagine that if the Giants want to get serious about building a contender, they have to get off the new GM / HC carousel every few years.
Schoen must have had a plan when they hired him, so let him work it. After 5 years if this team is still a stinker, then  make the change, but otherwise I think he will be safe for another 3 seasons.
As far as Daboll, I think the same, barring any more flare ups with the coaching staff.
I agree with you that they are in a rebuild.  But, they probably cant call it that since they made the playoffs in their first season but, more importantly, I think the seat licenses and ticket and parking prices and others are off the charts high.  Its very hard to charge what they charge and say we're rebuilding.

That said, to the question that was posed in the thread, how do you answer without knowing how they did.  I will say this.  Regardless of who is the QB, if the OL is as bad as it was last year, I think Schoen would more than likely lose his job.

If Waller is cut, then TE becomes a critical draft need.  If they bring him back, we still need a TE but a lower need.  I would not add another critical need.  If they do cut Waller, it suggests to me that we are totally rebuilding and will look to fill holes at OL, WR, RB, DL and CB, maybe safety if McKinney is not signed and TE.  To me, that would mean fill as many holes as you can and definitely no trade down for QB.

Count me in as one who remains convinced that the original Williams was a horrible move.  I don't get how any other position on this makes any sense.  But, Schoen's trade to get more than Williams was worth was, I think, his best personnel move since he got the job.  I get that money was a factor but getting a 2nd was a heist.

Not a loaded question.  Has any NY team in any sport, ever tanked?  I can't think of one and I go back years.  The NY ticket prices are so high that Incan see owners not letting this happen.  But, I'm asking if there are examples of tanking which is what the Giants would have done by trading Barkley and McKinney when they traded Williams.

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 21, 2024, 01:48:51 PMI think Herbert is the poster boy disputing the idea that drafting a really good QB will change your team's fortunes.   You're correct. The Chargers have done poorly since drafting Herbert, and the Giants actually have more playoff teams in their first 4 years with Jones than the Chargers with Herbert.

Where things get muddy is that while the team has performed poorly, Herbert has put up impressive stats.   So one wonders if Herbert is like Cousins, a QB who will put up great stats but not lead his team to victory, or is Herbert simply the victim of being drafted by a poorly run team?

One of the things we don't need to wonder about with JJ McCarthy is if he is a winner or not.   JJ has done nothing but win since he put in a helmet in HS.
I read your post twice and cannot understand how, in evaluating or drawing any conclusions about Herbert, you don't mention one of the worst head coaches the NFL had ever seen and someone likely never to get a head coaching job again.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Let's talk about Jayden Daniels

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 21, 2024, 06:44:11 PMJess,

Daniels dominated almost all the stats I looked at.  He was Statistically dominant.  I guess the biggest issue will be he was only really dominant his last season (add in he is on the older side).

I will confess, I haven't yet watched a lot of film on him.

I am not sure he will fall to the Giants.  From what I am hearing this early is Maye is more likely to drop.
I listened to a podcast you mentioned the other day from the GM Shuffle called the Lying Season or something like that.  I'm not believing any of the stories about players moving up or down especially a few months before the draft.

Quote from: Bob In PA on February 20, 2024, 12:39:10 PMRich: That was my conclusion. He was peddling uphill, not to the extent Jones did at Duke, but it was still uphill.

If anything, there is a strong possibility he was actually held back a bit by the combination of having had a very strong run-game, combined with having a head coach who values the college run-game as being of the utmost importance, especially in big games against the best teams.

I'm warming to McCarthy a bit. More importantly, I can almost guarantee Mara would love to have an Irishman (if not an actual "Fighting Irish"-man lol) as the QB of his team.

So IMO it's likely there's some truth behind the idea that the Giants are interested in drafting McCarthy.

Beware: if they do take him without first trading down in round one, there will be howls in certain quarters of the media (and probably here too) about how the same thing happened with Jones (most people felt they could have gotten Jones a whole lot lower and should have risked a trade down).

Bob
Bob- I hope you are totally wrong about Mara and wanting an Irishman.  Please say that you are joking.  I'm guessing that Schoen will run his choice by Mara but the only part of the draft I want Mara to be involved is having his picture taken and writing a check.

To your point about JJ being held back by his coach, the flip side of that is that being that Harbaugh was a QB, and possibly or probably a QB coach somewhere in his resume, and JJ was taught how to throw correctly and whatever flaws he may have had, were coached out of him.

As an aside, with 2 months before the draft and the all of the work that goes into the selection, combines, pro days, meetings, etc, the level of specificity that people are showing about the players and where they are taken is way overboard and borderline comical.

Quote from: Rosehill Jimmy on February 20, 2024, 10:34:21 AMTo some extent it can but it's my belief that a team cannot hope to be good without an adequate line.  Can you run the ball when everyone knows you're going to? Can you protect when everyone knows you're throwing?  The Giants line has come up woefully short in these areas far too long. IMO
I agree 100% and glad you used the word adequate for the OL.  The Giants have not had even an adequate line in years.  And, getting an adequate is way more doable than a great especially in the short run.  Put a good QB who can threaten a defense with a good WR who can threaten a defense and a playcaller who can do the same behind an adequate line and we can win
