Big Blue Huddle / Winks misuse of Thibs
October 09, 2023, 01:37:45 PM
What I am about to say is in no way meant to exonerate Thibs for the level of his play thus far in his career, but why in God's name do you draft an OLB fifth overall and then ask him to set the edge on running plays and then drop him into coverage with regularity.

When you're drafting a player that high it's to get a guy who can be disruptive in the backfield. I just don't understand why they wasted the 5th overall just to use him in a manner that is least likely to get the greatest impact out of him.

Quote from: Rambo89 on October 09, 2023, 11:47:05 AMIn Gettleman's defense he did draft a starting Left Tackle with the 4th overall pick the year after Jones was drafted.  That guy turned out to become an All Pro Tackle.  Schoen has spent a number of draft capital on linemen.  The Giants have spent more draft capital on linemen than any team in the league yet have gotten the worst ROI of any team in the league.  It's why I don't believe spending another Top 10 draft selection on a linemen in 2024 is the solution.  The Giants need to figure out what they're doing wrong and why their high value investments have given them so little.

You missed the part where I said that it should be done the year of or year after you draft the quarterback. Our line sucked back then. Drafting one lineman doesn't qualify as throwing assets at the line.

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 09, 2023, 11:19:07 AMSometimes, we have seen such QBs do well later in their careers.  Look at Geno Smith or Rich Gannon as two examples (Randy Mueller had more examples in his latest podcast but I can't remember them).

Neither guy was physically brutalized for years like Jones has been. The only analog I can come up with is David Carr. I've said this in the past and I'll say it again and again. If you're going to draft a quarterback in the top ten you had better be prepared to waste significant cap space and draft picks to ensure he has a competent offensive line to play behind. Apparently Dave Gettleman had different ideas.

Quote from: TDToomer on October 09, 2023, 10:44:53 AMI blame the coaches for not swapping him an Neal. Neal played LT his final year of college which is why he was taken 7th overall. There is no reason why he should not be protecting the blind side.

Are you sure that it would have made any difference? Both guys aren't good.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: First Guy I’d bench or trade

With Drake May and Caleb Williams floating around out there I'd hope that every veteran who is on an expiring contract with some value will be dealt for picks and a better chance of actually landing a franchise quarterback. It's not like Williams, Jackson and McKinney are making a difference. If Barkley gets healthy and plays well they should move him too. Same goes for Waller and Campbell.

Quote from: Rambo89 on October 08, 2023, 06:06:28 PMJones hasn't been good enough to blast anyone.  But even if he was that's not him.  No one ever questioned his professionalism and toughness but that is only going to take a player so far in the NFL.

The man has been physically brutalized because of other men's ineptitude. Never said he was a good player but when you get beat pillar to post every weekend you have a right to say something IMHO.

Agreed. If anyone was ever justified in putting his teammates, coaches and organization on blast it's Jones. He is a class act even if he isn't the guy at the position.

Mara was born on third base thinking he hit a triple. Let's face it, the children of really successful people tend to think that they inherited the gifts of their parents. They didn't. Mara is incompetent. I have a decade of absolute dysfunction to back that statement up. I don't have a beef with Tisch because he isn't involved in the day to day operations of the franchise.

Could anyone do better with the bag of garbage he's handed every week?

You're right. I thought it was a 4th. Even then he wore his welcome out in three years. How many guys with his size, speed and athletic ability get traded that early in their careers. His first years were really good.

In a league where talent is at a premium two teams have gotten tired of him and given him away for next to nothing. Wait until he realizes the other two are going to get 80% of the balls.

Quote from: Philosophers on October 06, 2023, 12:46:58 PMPick their guy is stupid reason.

Really? It's certainly a reason and it isn't stupid. Jones isn't a good quarterback. NFL head coaches and GM's usually get one opportunity to show they're worth it. If you're Daboll or Schoen do you want to anchor your future to a bad player they didn't pick? I know I wouldn't, and both men didn't get stupid overnight. That contract extension has Mara's grubby fingerprints all over it.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on October 05, 2023, 07:34:33 PMAt this point if a team has an injury would you be ok with trading Jones for a 4th just to get him off the books? It'd cost us 11 million the next few years but I would be fine with it. I think the Problem would be finding the team that would take him.

Yes. I'd even throw in our 3rd round pick to make it happen. I'd use the cap space to fix the line and use our first round pick in Jones replacements.

Quote from: kartanoman on October 05, 2023, 03:22:22 PMAnyone here who has not mouthed off in frustration, at someone else in response to persistent criticism, regardless whether justified or not, let that individual cast the first stone.

Sound of a 🎤 dropping ensues.

Peace!

Wrong. Put it into the proper context. He's at work and addressing his paying customers, and no I've never told a customer to go to hell after repeatedly delivering horrendous service. Only a dolt would do that. Not quite the Mike drop you think it is.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 05, 2023, 06:25:55 AMFans will eventually get over it if he plays well. But what are the odds of that?

If he continues to suck, which at this point is the base case, they will be increasingly ruthless.

Here is a good Don LeGreca meltdown about this incident. He starts talking about the actual quote at approximately the 4 minute mark.

Yes but I just don't see it. Some guys are cut out to play in NY. Thomas never once mouthed off to the fans that wanted his head. Instead he worked until he was a pro bowl caliber player. Neal, IMHO, has rabbit ears and no high profile player can survive in NY if they can't ignore the fans or the media. It sucks.
