What this article ignores is that drafting a QB at 1 or 2 doesn't necessarily mean we are done with DJ. The Niners just traded Trey Lance (for next to nothing) so its not unprecedented. What do you think we'd get for a Drake Maye or Caleb Williams if DJ somehow plays better and looks to be the future? Not nothing, I would think.

The issue is timing. There is no chance to evaluate DJ before the draft, and his performance in Daboll's system is hit and miss, at best. Remember, he did great against a terrible Vikings defense in the playoffs, but otherwise dropped off the end of last year. You have to take a chance that there is a better QB out there. This year has been a disaster, and if we have the right administration in place, there may not be another opportunity to draft this high any time soon.

The draft is a crapshoot, and every year QB prospects that are promised to be all pros never make a second contract. Many more misses than hits.

We have to trust Schoen knows how to scout QBs that will fit in and do well in Daboll's system. The only other ways are drafting a bunch of QBs until you find a good one (taking draft picks away from other positions), or getting one through free agency (tying up all your cap room). The terrible thing is, rarely are one of these guys outright busts. The team usually waits a couple years before it decides.

I think this is not the right way to look at it. If Schoen has a QB he thinks can be the franchise guy, draft slot shouldn't matter -- he has to go get him and spend whatever it takes to get there.

When he was in Buffalo, they ID'ed Allen. They didn't have to move up too much, but they did end up trading some guys and moving some picks to get in position. They have to do the same here.

We are going to be picking top 4, I would guess. Getting up to 1 may take a haul, but what is a franchise guy worth?

I was going to answer each of these, but the bottom line is no one looked good. They sacked DeVito 6 times and pressured him on almost every other drop back. We didn't sack Dak once. I'm not even sure he had to hurry.

Dallas did whatever they wanted on both sides of the ball. We had 28 yards total offense in the first half.

So, lucky you missed it! I sat through every minute, no idea why. Too lazy to move I guess.

Both fanbases had some optimism going in, but Jets fans were making super bowl travel plans. We Giants fans had a lot of "if this" and "if that."  That said, Jets fans should be used to disappointment.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: next year Vets - stay or go

I'd keep:
Slayton -- As pathetic as it is, he is our best WR.
Pugh  -- he'll be cheap, and to be honest since he got here he's at least had some fire
Ojulari -- Not sure when his contract is up, but I feel like he's still cheap? Makes an impact when he does play.
Holmes -- Depth
Taylor -- Interchangeable with any number of vet QBs, but someone needs to keep the seat warm. Him or someone like him.

Schoen and Daboll know QB is job one. Even if we end up the 4 or 5 pick range, they might sell off some guys and picks to move up.

The only team on our schedule in similar shape is the Pats.

It feels way too early to get excited about having a top-2 pick, but we are already 10 point underdogs to the damn Commies.

The only win I could imagine would be against the Pats, who are extremely dysfunctional. I also wouldn't bet against Belichick righting the ship a little, there is buzz about Kraft being upset. Belichick want's that Shula record.

He's a QB, drafted 6th. In my mind any QB drafted that high who doesn't become a franchise player is a bust.

I just do not know what happened to the player we saw last year. I thought for sure he was ready to take the next step. But he regressed and the Giants can waste any more time on him.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on November 10, 2023, 04:25:01 PMJust because Jones was a huge bust doesn't mean another Qb would have been.

Exactly. Are we arguing never to pick a QB? Jones was overdrafted at 6. For five years now, we've wondered if Jones is the guy and in the second year of the same system he was supposed to take a step up and hasn't.

Teams get this wrong every year. The last time we got it right was almost 20 years ago now. If Schoen and Daboll get it wrong next year, they'll be replaced by someone else.

His contract, injury history, and performance will keep him from getting traded. He'll go on IR to start the season, Tyrod Taylor (or some other cheap vet) will start but waiting in the wings will be the new rookie. The new rookie starts by week 10.  If they bring Jones back up when he's ready, I think he'll start and cut the vet. If the rookie is starting, there are going to be too many calls for Jones if there are bumps in the road.

Quote from: kingm56 on November 10, 2023, 11:39:02 AMIf Carolina has the number 1 pick, will they go QB again?

The Bears own Carolina's Number 1 pick and they also currently have the 5. They helped themselves beating Carolina last night and they've got more than enough ammo to move into number 1 if Carolina wins a couple games. Question is whether the Bears want a new QB and are giving up on Fields, who hasn't shown much when he's not hurt. Arizona would probably like to move on from Murray, but didn't he just sign a contract? If the Cards didn't front load it like the Giants did they may wait.

Ugh, may have to sync the TV with Bob Papa. The amount of Cowboy worshipping that is going to aired on this game will be vomit worthy.

Only hope is the D comes to play again and we keep it close. Maybe we'll get a "Uh oh, the Cowboys can't be happy going forward with the play of the offense today, despite the win."

Quote from: AZGiantFan on November 08, 2023, 04:42:01 PMI think it's a mistake to take a QB even if they aren't a sub-par talent.  Because the reality that some have spent 5 years ignoring, because of their bias against DJ, is that the Giants have a roster that is seriously sub-par.  And until they fix THAT, no QB is going to come in and be the saviour, and expending huge amounts of draft capital and CAP space to get a saviour that won't save them is going to come at a serious cost towards fixing that sub-par roster.

A rookie QB is going to be on a rookie contract, which leaves plenty of cap room to build other areas of the team. In fact, having a decent QB on a rookie contract is an incredible competitive advantage, given what even mediocre QBs demand on the market. We will have some dead money after next year from now after we let DJ go but that is unavoidable at this point.

Also, pretend we do as you say and build the rest of the team first. Great, now we've got a team good enough to win 8 or 9 games, but not good enough to compete in the playoffs without a stud QB. Moving from 10 or 11 spots to the within striking distance of a great QB is either going to be impossible or cost more in picks and players than makes sense. Or we can hope to strike gold in a later-round QB who turns out to be great, but that's a winning lotto ticket.

There is a decent core here now. We've got pro bowl (or pro bowl deserving players) at OL, DL, LB (Okereke), CB (Banks) and RB. Now is the time while the opportunity presents itself to go get the franchise guy, like we did in 2004.

This assumes Schoen stays pat. If they are at 4 and think one of the three teams above them is picking the QB they like, they need to trade up. Besides the need, it is rare you are in within striking distance of the top pick in any case.

With Jones tearing his ACL and DeVito likely starting at least two more games, The Athletic has the Giants as most likely to get the top pick anyway.
