Quote from: madbadger on April 23, 2024, 11:52:48 AMIMHO both Schoen and Daboll are going to get at least four years, especially after they squeezed a playoff appearance out of a relatively untalented team. Mara is on record as saying that we can't continue to keep cycling through head coaches every three years. I suppose Daboll could be gone at the end of the year if he becomes more dictatorial and erratic than this past year but I think Schoen is safe.

I can only see Daboll gone with not just a bad season, but a nuclear meltdown season. Everything has to go wrong and he has to respond to it poorly. Outside of that, I think he gets year 4 (now a survivably-bad season might make the question of him getting a second contract more murky, but that's a different concept).

I agree Schoen is going to get more rope, as this roster was laughably bad and poorly constructed when he came to the team. His first draft class is just entering their third season. There is some promise in that group (Kayvon, Wan'Dale, Flott, Belton, McFadden), even with warts (Neal, Ezeudu), that I think you give him the benefit of the doubt.

Kerry Collins led the Giants to the Superbowl in 2000 and in his 2002 season, he was fourth in the NFL in passing yards. Jones hasn't come close to the achievements of Collins and is perpetually a injury risk. There would be no "chaos." The only reason drafting of a QB may(e) be relatively surprising is not because the Giants don't covet one, but because their draft position may not afford them the opportunity to get one of the top prospects. But make no mistake, if the Giants were picking in the top 3 of the draft, there would be zero doubt they would take a QB. So there is little reason for "chaos"--instead, only excitement--if the draft board falls differently than anticipated and gives the Giants a windfall.

Steep drop. Probability is that 2025 pick is in the 20s. But if there was another bad season for the Giants in 2024-2025, could that additional 1st rounder help facilitate a trade up for a QB (if they weren't already in position)? I would imagine Schoen is considering such possibilities. If I'm the Giants, I stay pat at pick number 6.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Is there a QB shortage?

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 10, 2024, 06:48:53 PMYou could also point out that Reid never won a Super Bowl without Steve Spagnoluo as his DC or Travis Kelcy as his TE

Why would I? QB is the most important position on the field and Mahomes is a generational superstar. This was a thread about QBs. The other comment mentioned Reid's ability with QBs and I was identifying that the primary reason he has such a reputation is Mahomes.

Quote from: TONKA56 on April 10, 2024, 05:02:17 PMContrary to popular belief, Mahomes didn't just happen in a vacuum. He was assisted in reaching his potential as a pro by the best QB friendly head coach since Bill Walsh.

Despite being the "best QB friendly head coach" in 30 years (in your estimation), Reid never won the Superbowl until he had Mahomes. His reputation when he left Philly was a coach who could not win the big one, despite very talented squads (recall the putative "Dream Team"). Mahomes has done a ton for Reid's legacy. My statements also do not imply anything other than Reid is a very good coach.

Very disappointed.

Nabers is ranked as third overall prospect in the draft. I know some want a prototypical X (Odunze)--and there are some concerns with Nabers--but I'd be very happy with a Nabers pick at #6.

I look at those moves and see it differently. He's not moving core draft assets, but primarily (what you could consider) "bonus" or low-value draft assets. For instance:

  • The second rounder in the Burns trade was the NYG natural pick, but they have another from Seattle via the Leonard Williams trade. So that trade is mainly a pick swap of the 2nd round and a low-value asset in the 5th rounder for a potential star-level edge rusher.
  • Waller was via a "comp pick" that they got for trading Toney to the Chiefs (a toxic player Schoen didn't draft), so again, the Giants had a selection in the 3rd round (Jalin Hyatt).
  • Simmons and Basham were 6th and 7th round picks, which have little value. Yes, some players magically hit, but the vast majority do not and Simmons was an actual contributor.

To sum it up, I see Schoen very willing to move assets provided that the Giants still maintain picks in the first four rounds. Time will tell whether its ultimately effective, but I think the methodology makes sense.

Interesting thread located here.

Obviously this could just be anyone talking, so take it with a grain of salt. But I at least found it somewhat interesting (Nabers as a #1 WR in other draft classes without MHJ, JJ hype is real, Maye criticism isn't).

Seems a bit silly to me to say improving the roster is somehow maneuvering to protect Daboll? Ostensibly the offense also needs to play better given how bad it was--does adding players to that side of the roster mean the Giants are trying to keep Daboll from being fired as well? Plenty to be critical of with this team. This is kind of meaningless nothing to me.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 28, 2024, 10:18:19 AMThere are many ways to evaluate a QB, but this particular way (he threw too many passes, that's why he looks flawed) wouldn't be among the ways I would choose to evaluate one.

It was a lighthearted joke about McCarthy being immunized from potentially similar volume-based criticism.

I do think Maye is somewhat the victim of prospect fatigue and this is the time of year where hopeful teams farther down in the draft order start putting out their disinformation to try and cause drops on desirable targets.

Maybe if he only threw it 10-15 times per game there'd be less tape to be critical of his processing? If he falls to 6, I'd take him, but I don't see it happening.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 27, 2024, 02:44:11 PMHe is the same size as OBJ and the Giants had no problem playing OBJ on the outside

Nabers lined up in the slot +50% of the time at LSU, which is why I referenced the slot-incumbent Robinson. To my memory, Beckham's college usage was primarily on the outside.

Nabers with a 4.35... dang.

I know a lot around here like Odunze, but I think Nabers fits the modern-offense WR role very well. Contested catch receivers give me hesitation--though Odunze is also extremely athletic. However, given what the Bills did with Stefon Diggs, I would not be surprised (nor upset in the least) if they drafted Nabers. You can't ignore a talent like him just because you might already have Wan'Dale in the fold.

It actually promotes kickoff returns. Kickoff returns are fun. I'm certainly interested in giving the rule a shot this year instead of the new pro forma of every kick go out the back of the endzone.
