Quote from: Giant Jim on November 06, 2023, 06:51:35 AMI didn't think that until yesterday. The losses to the Jets & Buffalo could've been prevented by coaching, but could be part of learning for the head coach. Yesterday's fiasco in inexcusable.
Quote from: GordonGekko80 on November 06, 2023, 01:52:07 PMI have to be honest, I don't understand how we can blame the coach for a game lost where you lose your 1st string QB due to an ACL tear... And the rest of the season won't be any better, unless they find a good fit to replace DeVito.
I felt the offense didn't show anything with Jones in there. Maybe Jones would've shook off the rust if he didn't get hurt, but the line and the defense looked terrible from start to finish. The Raiders looked inspired, the Giants were not up for the game. Maybe the Williams trade, but the head coach should be ahead of something like this. I made and accepted excused for the 2 previous losses, but combined with yesterday's fiasco, I think there's a good possibly that could be more serious problems in the coaching of this team. I'm not calling for Daboll's job yet, but yesterday's showing is as bad as it gets.

Quote from: Giant Jim on November 06, 2023, 01:11:35 PMHe gave Judge a 5 year contract and said he would slowly get involved with GM type decisions thru the years. I believed him to mean or indicate Judge would eventually have Belichick type control.

Quote from: madbadger on November 06, 2023, 01:41:46 PMI'm talking about what Mara said after he fired Judge.

OK. I was just pointing out how Mara changes his direction. I don't think he was planning on firing Judge until GM interviewees pointed out to him that Judge was part of the problem and possibly that they wouldn't consider taking the job if Judge stayed.

Quote from: madbadger on November 06, 2023, 01:04:48 PMMara said after he fired Judge that we can't keep firing coaches after two years. So no he won't get fired absent some egregious personal behavior. He gets another year and I'm fine with it as the issues plaguing this franchise run so much deeper than coaching.

Quote from: Woody on November 06, 2023, 09:26:41 AMDaboll needs to take a lessen from Coughlin .... let the team have a players only meeting and then talk to one or two captains , not ten, and get their input on what needs to change so they will have some real ownership in what is done different moving forward.
I think he's down to 1 or 2 captains, the rest are injured or traded.  :D

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants vs Raiders game thread

This team was totally unprepared for this game, the defense too. I don't know what happened from last year, but there were many coaching decisions I felt were poor in previous games I was willing to look past, but the play of the entire team so far is inexcusable. People want to get great draft position for a QB, how did the inept Raiders get this guy? Or is the D playing that bad?

What's with Riley? Is he hurt? I thought we'd see him with Williams gone.

Quote from: katkavage on November 05, 2023, 01:51:44 PMCleveland had the big love for him. Not sure if others did. I do remember the nonsense about Allen's accuracy and Jackson not being the prototype NFL QB. Shows you how wrong scouts are.
The Jets passed on both. Shows it's hit or miss on many. The book's still out on our # 7 overall pick but our #5 has been doing well against weaker offensive lines lately.

Quote from: katkavage on November 05, 2023, 01:21:20 PMOr Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold.
They were all there for them, they passed. Mayfield was the no questions asked top choice.

If the Giants had the 1st pick of the 2018 draft, they could've had Baker Mayfield instead of Barkley.

Quote from: Dgoodmantrublu on November 02, 2023, 05:16:08 PMI'm sure the Jets wish they didn't win that game that caused them to lose out on Trevor Lawrence. In 1980 they won a meaningless game and we got Lawrence Taylor instead of them. Meaningless wins in a lost season accomplish nothing.
The Giants got him with the 2nd pick. There hasn't been a player that good since, except possibly Brady.

Quote from: Woody on November 05, 2023, 08:13:11 AMThis stuff about losing to improve draft position is a failed strategy that has paid off for who ?  Certainly not the Giants...they are in top ten almost every year and what has it got them ?

I agree with everything you wrote except calling losing to improve draft position "a failed STRATEGY" I don't believe it was ever in their plans or their intention to lose as a strategy.

Quote from: bamagiantfan on November 03, 2023, 08:57:42 AMThere is a common feeling that if you don't get one of the top 10 guys in the draft, then you have missed out on something. The Giants are not going to be better simply by drafting a few spots higher or lower to pick up one or two guys. In the last 10 drafts they had a top 10 pick 6 times. The issue with the Giants through all the front office and coaching changes has not been with those high draft choices. The issues have been with every player drafted from round 3 to the end of the draft.

So, I don't buy into the tanking to get a shot at one or two guys at the top of the draft. What the Giants NEED to do is find more Micah McFaddens and Julian Loves in the draft. There have been entirely too few contributors coming from Day 3 selections and the depth on this team and the number of free agents they had to bring in to start or backup at key positions (Waller, Hodgins, Brieda, Campbell, Okereke, Jackson, Simmons, Pugh, Bredesen, Glowinski, and until last week, Williams) is a reflection of that.
In today's game, they're always going to have to bring in players like Pugh and Hodgins. The thing is, they should be brought in as back ups to the back ups, not starting almost immediately. But they don't cost much. A draft pick for a player like Waller could be OK, but team control on his contract is less time than a draft pick. You are spot on about players like Jackson, Glowinski and Okereke. Free agents like them eat up the cap and prevent the team from extending contracts for players like Love. Extended contracts pay players less than if the become completely free which benefits the team long range and adds security for the player before they would reach total free agency.

The way they locked up Thomas was perfect. Their handling of Jones and Barkley was bungled, but that's more because of new management not knowing the players and recovery from earlier injuries.

The draft only adds about 7 new players, how many on average play significant rolls for 5 years or more? They have well more than 7 already on their roster that need to play well and be a part of the future. The team has missed having a 3 game winning streak because of in game decisions and missed field goals. Thomas, Neal, Schitz, Jones and Barkley have all missed several games each. Pugh seems to be a nice fit, but he wasn't here to start the season. Tyre Phillips could a valuable asset. Waller's injury could be a blessing in disguise, now Bellinger will get better chances. Leo's departure should give Jordon Riley a chance to play and grow.

If you want them to lose to get better draft picks, then they need players like those to fail and that means total rebuild from the very bottom up.

If most of them do well and show they belong, then they can continue building and become competitive with the best teams in the league much sooner.

What's Schoen's record for drafting QB's? You think an early draft pick guarantees a great QB? How about a good one?

If you think wanting the Giants to lose will help them become a better team, lets all root for Philly and Dallas to win the super bowl so they get terrible draft picks.

For those that want them to lose, do you want players like Jalin Hyatt and Tre Hawkins to play terrible? Do you have no interest if Jordon Riley is any good. You think it's better to just cut him and use a premium draft pick to replace him? How about Evan Neal? Best for him to give up a bunch of sacks so they can try again in the next draft? I want him to play as much as possible and hopefully do well and show improvement. That was a high draft pick they used for him, he needs to be given every chance to improve.

Most games are over 3 hours long and there are a minimum of 17 every year. The Giants are on the clock what, about 30-40 minutes total at the draft? I them to do well and win for the 50+ hours I watch. The draft is for talk, the games are top entertainment.
