Big Blue Huddle / Re: Our team is poorly coached

Quote from: LennG on December 25, 2023, 08:09:17 PMMy problem with Daboll is he is new and probably doesn't have the authority to make coaching changes. There is no way our OL AND ST coaches should be here now, both are awful and that translates to the field. I see other trams relieve certain coaches of their duties mid stream, yet these two are just bad yet they continue here as if there is nothing we can do about it. Is Daboll afraid of doing something like this?

If Joe Judge had the authority to fire his OL coach after half a season, I'm sure Daboll has authority too.

Before DeVito entered, I was pretty convinced Daboll was pretty much another Joe Judge and saw no reason to keep him. Now I think there's something there, but I'm still not sure what.

I do know that if we're looking at overhauling large parts of our coaching staff, I'm not sure I want to keep Daboll.

I think he's an empty suit - about worth as much as Shula was under Shurmur; we know who runs this offense.

So it's do I want Daboll fired. I think his work with DeVito earned him another year, but he and Schoen's seats have to be pretty hot.

I wanted him fired - or at least saw no reason to keep him. I'll own it.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on December 12, 2023, 07:14:05 AMDevito made some really nice throws when he had to (the TD pass to Hodgins for example).  158 yards passing certainly isn't anything special.  A 81.7 QBR is a solid number though.

Stats or not, it's a fun run and more than I was expecting.  Things usually get more difficult as teams get more tape on a QB, so we'll see how it goes for the last 4 games.

When you rush for 200+ yards and get 3 takeaways, you don't need gaudy passing stats to win.  They aren't going to do that every week, but even in a passing league, it's a winning formula.

The good thing is, what's there to see on tape for DeVito? He's not doing anything defensive coordinators haven't seen before. This is what he is right now.

Yeah, who knows at this point. May as well see where this ride leads us, and who knows, maybe we have a QB.

If not, at least we seem to have a backup QB.

I want him to be what we thought he could be, but he's speeding down the Ereck Flowers path. I hope a change of OL coach can help fix him.

Quote from: Symphony Steve on November 21, 2023, 11:08:28 AMThere's only one bye now in each conference, right?

Detroit's right there. If Dallas beats Detroit, then Dallas is right there. Not to mention the Niners.

The last thing the Eagles will be worried about is where the Giants pick in the draft.

Assuming the Eagles have something to play for.

If they don't, they can and will absolutely throw that game, so blatantly that people will know it's fixed. And Sirianni will do it in a way to humiliate the Giants too, like having QBs toss the ball directly to Giants players bad.

Or lead by 20 in the 4th quarter with 5 minutes to go and just start letting Giants players run down the field with no one covering them.

"Oops, our defense totally was confused on some of those 4th quarter plays, our offense was careless with the ball, *wink* *wink* can't let that happen in the playoffs"

He's definitely earned it and it's good to see that he's plugged away at it and continues to show growth. That's some rare company right there.

Maybe there's hope for Neal too.

Apparently due to a quirk of NFL rules he's been on the roster for almost 30 years.

This would never happen, but you make the trade. What's better than a chance at a star QB in his prime? An actual star QB in his prime.

I get the gold standard of wanting that star QB on a rookie deal. But I'd rather get the sure thing than a potential bust.

The salary cap? You'd get Allen and figure out the rest of the roster afterward.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 11, 2023, 09:45:39 AMCan you be more specific? Williams has no disciplinary history or any other significant problems. He's been a star on the field. He seems personable. I don't get where the negativity is coming from. I'd love to know.

When I hear "doesn't seem like the type Mara would want to be the face of the franchise" about someone who has done nothing wrong (at least that anyone knows about), I have to say, it makes me wonder what the person making that claim is really thinking.

I think Mara basically wants the Eli profile, so to speak. Even tempered on field and off, says inoffensive things to the media, does team and charity events, quiet leader. Jones fit that profile. I don't think Caleb Williams does.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on November 12, 2023, 09:03:05 PMWe don't have great offensive pieces and a 3rd string qb. Just not sure what you expected given the circumstances.

Chicago's won a game or two with the a QB with arguably less experience than DeVito going into the season.

After a night to calm down, I still agree that I see no reason to bring Daboll back. The entire coaching staff stinks. Especially along the offensive line. Even Joe Judge had the sense to intervene when Colombo was busy turning Thomas into a bust. There was no intervention for Neal or Ezudu. Kafka is an empty suit.

Martindale is vastly overrated and the last two weeks the better defensive coordinator was on the other side of the ball. Dan Quinn and ... who was that other guy again? The defense not only stops nobody when it counts, but I imagine it impacts the offense practicing against it and then having to actually play against other defenses on Sunday.

When you need the deep level of coaching changes this team needs, it would almost have to include the head coach. People pointing out Coughlin dumping his coordinators but that was after 2 playoff seasons. Plus Coughlin was an established coach. Daboll, not so much.

The only reasons to keep Daboll are his 6-1 start and the idea that we can't keep firing coaches in year 2. But once again the wheels are rapidly falling off.

The other reason to get rid of Daboll is because we're starting over at QB. We need to get the GM/HC/QB schedule aligned so this team can have some direction. Gettleman and Shurmur inherited Eli, then Judge inherited Jones, then Schoen and Daboll also inherited Jones.

Now let's get this out of the way - Schoen and Daboll already had a chance to choose their QB, and they chose Jones.

What probably makes the most sense here is:

If we finish bad enough to get one of those top 2 franchise QBs, then Daboll is fired, a new coach is brought in, and we blow up the team and start over with the new QB. The new coach, QB, and Schoen get 3 years, or else all 3 exit.

If he manages to scrape out another win (against say New England), 3-14 probably has this team picking third. Keep him one more year and if he and Schoen don't show improvement, sack them and then start over with a new regime.
