Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants deserved to lose
October 29, 2023, 04:56:06 PM
Nonsense. Daboll did everything right in regulation. As good as the Defenses were and as bad as the Offenses were, the kickers decided it. The Jets kickers badly outplayed the Giants kickers, and that was the difference.

As frustrating as that game was to watch these are the games the Giants have to win to hang around while players are trying to get healthy and the Offense is trying to find its stride. You do that by players making plays. The Defense made plays again and again. Eventually, it was the Jets players who made the plays in this one.

Thank God for bourbon. This one is hard to deal with but Daboll gave the players a chance to win it. They didn't.

I think they would like to get the ball to him more but I imagine some of the plays where they planned to do so fell apart due to inadequate line play, and as a result, the ball had to go elsewhere. I think you will see more shallow crossing routes to use his speed and get the ball out quicker instead of throwing him balls with 20+ air yards. They have started doing that with Waller who arguably has had the same issue with not being targeted enough before last week. Hyatt has a lot of promise but he still has 2 good games and 5 bad ones to date, much like the Giants. There is enough blame to go around for that between him, the way he is being used, play-calling, and inconsistent O-line and QB play.

For me, until the QB has more time I think we will continue to see the targets for Waller and Robinson go up while Hyatt gets about the same number of looks he has been getting. I don't think everyone is going to be happy with that, but until Hyatt gets more precise with his route running on shorter routes that is what I expect to see. I also think they could get him the ball more often if they were playing from ahead which has been a rarity of late. Playing from behind, the Defense can insist on not giving up the big play by blitzing and playing two deep safeties. The Giants haven't been able to hurt teams for doing that.

I don't see him as a #1 but he has quickly developed into what they needed him to be - a downfield threat. The Giants haven't had a WR who scared Defenses in a long time. Some might say since Victor Cruz. The Giants need that to force Defenses to play the deep area. If the Giants had a true number one, Hyatt would be a very good number two who can stretch Defenses and give more room for the other receivers to work.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants VS Bills game thread

It's nice to have something to complain about in a game that most of us thought the Giants had no shot to win.

I know fans here are upset with losing a game the Giants could have won. But f you think we are alone and really want to see a fanbase upset with their team's play yesterday, go over to the Bills' Message Boards. They thought they would be happily going to bed at halftime. They are losing their minds over there.

If the Chargers can take care if business tonight, the Giants will not play a team that is currently above 0.500 until Christmas.

This team looked like less of a mess last night and players are starting to come back from injuries. There is an opportunity to turn this around. This is the window in the season where they had to grab some wins.

Quote from: Giant Obsession on October 16, 2023, 12:18:35 AMThe refs gave us the call once.

We weren't getting it twice.

Getting that call again is reserved for the elite teams of the league, not the sad sacks.

It doesn't change the truth though. With all the emphasis we put on winning I fear that a win last night would have us talking about all the wrong things. The Red Zone issues, why Kafka waited until now to start moving the pocket, the O-line going forward, and how to take advantage of this Defense should all be topics of discussion and a win or loss shouldn't change that.

I thought the Giants would be 2-4 at this point at the start of the season and several others talked about it on this board as well. If the dropped one, which they did, they would need to steal one somewhere else, which they almost did last night. I'm still trying to decide for myself if this is the team I thought they were at the start of the season or if it is one that actually should still be looking for its first win. The injuries have muddied the water, as they often do.

If we learned anything from yesterday watching the Browns, Jets, and Giants, it is that Defense can get even a team with a struggling offense in position to win games. With all the other things there are to complain about on Offense, let's not forget to applaud the play and effort on the other side of the ball and the Special Teams who cleaned things up and gave us nothing to talk about today.

I know we just paid Jones the be the guy, but I want to know by the end of this season if he is THE GUY. Offensive line issues aside, there are some backups in the league and rookie QBs outplaying him right now. If he is healthy, he plays, especially if Kafka is now going to call plays to move the pocket like he did for Taylor.

One more thing, you can give Jones Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Stefon Diggs and throwing deep is not an option with this O-line and an empty set. It can't work.

Quote from: Rambo89 on October 04, 2023, 08:03:36 PMThis is exactly what the Giants have been running all season the short passing game and Jones checking down and going to underneath routes.  There is no looking down field or anticipating plays.  The problem is not that they haven't gone to the short passing game but rather than it's become predictable where Jones is going with the ball.

I disagree. Checkdowns were the problem against Seattle. Short routes should have been option 1, not checkdowns. Watch the replay. Jones looks downfield and scrambles after two seconds, still looking for options. In the second half, Seattle adjusted to the Giants always going empty in the backfield and sent an extra rusher off the edge.  There were not two seconds anymore. The ball needed to come out. Too me, the whole mess was on Kafka, not Jones.

Last year it was one step back, hit the back foot and the ball was out. James and Hodgins were constantly making catches on slants and quick curls. Now, they are getting greedy and the separation hasn't been there, or option one was a pass BEHIND the line of scrimmage. How is that going to work with this O-line?

Lenn, Jones ran for 60+ yards and completed almost 80% of his passes. Do you think Tyrod Taylor would do better?

As bad as everything was Monday, if Jones doesn't turn the ball over the Giants might have won. It was hard to watch, but we all watched because it was still a game until the pick 6. Are you wanting to bench him for the turnovers? I understand if the answer is yes, but then you have a dilemma going forward.

Let him play but multiple turnover games will not be tolerated. This isn't 2021. If they bench him after the second turnover in the first half, I'm good with it. Benching him now just doesn't make sense to me. Its like ousting McCarthy as Speaker. Now what?

I think these are over-reactions.

I think the Giants will revert back to the short passing game that was successful last season. It minimizes the deficiencies on the O-line and allows Jones to get the ball out quickly and build confidence. I truly do not understand why that wasn't the plan against Seattle to begin with. There was too much looking deep that resulted in scrambles or sacks while Daniel Jones finished the game completing almost 80% of his passes. Just take what is there!

Miami can score points. They also can't defend worth a crap. The Giants were going to have to steal a game somewhere to make the playoffs anyway. Why not start now? You want to throw deep? This is the game, but take the first downs underneath first.

I agree that 1-5 would be a tough hole to climb out of, but looking at the schedule at the start of the season, 1-5 was certainly possible, if not likely.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: It is all Greek to Me
October 03, 2023, 07:56:27 PM
I once said, "this is Greek" to a friend of mine whose parents are from Greece. He said, "Greek I can do, but this, THIS,...... I got nothing."

I think that helplessness is what we all feel.
Is this team good? I still think so.
Are they playing poorly? Certainly.
The only truth is that was game 4 of 17. The Giants are 1-3, Just like the Bengals. The fans of both teams didn't expect this.

Play it out. That's all they can do.
