Quote from: Rosehill Jimmy on February 20, 2024, 10:34:21 AMTo some extent it can but it's my belief that a team cannot hope to be good without an adequate line.  Can you run the ball when everyone knows you're going to? Can you protect when everyone knows you're throwing?  The Giants line has come up woefully short in these areas far too long. IMO
I agree 100% and glad you used the word adequate for the OL.  The Giants have not had even an adequate line in years.  And, getting an adequate is way more doable than a great especially in the short run.  Put a good QB who can threaten a defense with a good WR who can threaten a defense and a playcaller who can do the same behind an adequate line and we can win

Gettleman talking about his draft success is probably the very definition of chutzpah (nerve).  For what this is worth, although I like Barkley and would be happy if he was here going forward at a reasonable market CAP hit.  But, Gettleman considering him a success is a huge part of why he was worse than an incompetent GM.

I don't remember where I read this but I read somewhere that if a team drafts the wrong QB with a 1st round pick, it sets back the franchise 5 years to recover.  Whatever Schoen has done wrong to date, pales by comparison to the damage that Gettleman did if only with the Jones pick.

What a win by the Rangers.  3 goals in 4 minutes to tie and win the game in overtime

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on February 18, 2024, 04:24:34 PMI thought Pugh was terrible from what I saw last year. I have no interest in him playing for us again.
I posted above that I would like to see them sign a veteran for RT.  Not necessarily talking Pugh but there's guys around who could help.  In terms of Pugh playing terrible last year, I'm pretty sure he went from the couch to starting on one of the worst lines in the game.  He's playing a position that requires teamwork and coordination.  Wasn't exactly put in the right place to succeed with no trading camp and a revolving set of line mates.  I think you should take that into account.  May end up with the same conclusion but .....

I'm not sure if Pugh fits the bill.  But, I would like to see the Giants sign a Mike Remmers type veteran who can play RT at a respectable level if Neal does not step up.  That type of guy would come cheap.  I dont think they will draft over Neal this year with a high pick and we need a back up plan if Neal screws up.  Pugh, or someone like him, could do it.

If I thought Watson had much left in the tank, it might be worth it.  That 2nd round pick is appealing but that's too expensive.

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 16, 2024, 11:07:07 AMActually, if the Giants were to trade for Watson, they would be on the hook for $46 million (his guaranteed base salary) for the next three seasons.   The Browns own the rest because they did some bonuses.  If the Giants were to trade away Jones they would save nearly $14 million in cap space (with a $33 million dead cap charge).
If the Giants made the trade and cut Watson after a year, would they be on the hook for $46 m for the next 2 years?

Quote from: madbadger on February 14, 2024, 05:14:36 PMOne is a proven commodity the other isn't. Hope Bowen turns out to be the right call but I'd feel more confident with Wilks calling the defense heading into next year.
Bowen has a few years experience as a DC.  The Giants were criticized by many fir allegedly missing their top 2 choices for DC, neither of whom had any experience at the position.  We have a guy with a few years under his belt but young enough to grow

Quote from: madbadger on February 14, 2024, 04:38:17 PMToo bad this didn't happen a couple weeks ago before we hired Bowen. Not that I think that Bowen can't be a really good coordinator it's just that he's an unknown. Wilks is an excellent coordinator who is being scapegoated to protect the golden child head coach.
Bowen trained under some very sharp defensive guys.  He's 37 and has a few years of experience.   Not sure how the process worked which resulted in his hiring but I think we got a good young talented DC.

Im not 100% sure of this but close to it.  When Shurmur was hired, they fired Spags and brought in Bettcher as a replacement.  What a move.

What I like Spags, among other things, is that the defenses seem to play better as the season goes on.  It happened to KC this year and last and happened to the Giants during both SB runs

Quote from: T200 on February 12, 2024, 09:09:48 AMIt doesn't bother me. I just look forward to the day when Superbowl Monday is a national holiday and I don't have to go in to work.

But... in three years it won't matter to me because I'll be fully retired!  <:-P
Retirement is nice.  Im retired 12 now and should have done it 20 years before that.

He's a kid.  He's good now and I'm thinking he'll get better with more experience.  Fir what it's worth, it didnt look like he was overmatched.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: UK Giants does his first mock draft
February 09, 2024, 10:30:38 PM
Let me start by saying I am not a Jones fan, from the start I thought he was way overdrafted at 6.  I also cannot stand John Mara but the one thing he said that I agree was words to the effect that the team hasn't done right by Jones.  Given that we're locked into Jones for 2024, regardless of who is the QB going forward for the long run, we need, at a minimum, a decent OL. I'm not talking all star OL, adequate would be a good start.  Add to that, a WR that defenses would have to worry about.  We need both whether or not Jones is our starter.  If Jones starts, and stays healthy, a big if, and we've upgraded both areas, we'll do ok in my opinion.  If we don't upgrade both, I don't think it matters who the QB is.

Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on February 09, 2024, 09:00:39 AMFunniest line I've heard from talking heads on TV was, "who would have ever thought the smartest team in the NBA would be the Knicks?", followed by laughter
The best part of the Knicks moves is that while they clearly upgraded their goals from making the playoffs to going very deep inthe playoffs, they've done so with minimal impact for the future.  In fact, their short terms moves probably made their long term moves way more likely.  They're in a much better position to acquire the big star next year than they were at the start of the season.  Usually, the short term moves come at the expense of the long term.
