Quote from: Giant Jim on November 13, 2023, 02:24:36 PMEven when Prescott was in, they were throwing down field with the big lead. At no point did they just run the ball to burn the clock. I've hated this team since day 1. Sore losers, sore winners throughout their history. They've always been more arrogant than even the Al Davis Raiders.

This is where we'll see if Daboll has a long memory. Wellington Mara sure did. "It's nice to see arrogance humbled," he proudly gloated after his 1996 Giants disposed of the Cowboys in the old Giants Stadium.

The Giants' Victory Is Rated PG - Please Gloat

May the spirit of the old man touch his head coach and impart some wisdom in this difficult season.

That whole whiney business is for individuals who never put the pads on, laced them up, and competed in sport in their lives. You get on that field, sometimes you get your back end handed to you. You take it, you learn from it, and you carry it with you so as to remember what it felt like so that you'll do better and not let it happen again.

Adversity can do one of two things to an athlete. Let's see what it does to this group.

Quote from: EDjohnst1981 on November 13, 2023, 07:45:31 AMI also thought Quick would be an absolute seive but his been playing very well.

Compare where the Rangers were last year, at this time, with Halak, versus now, with Quick, and keeping in mind they finished third in the division last year, imagine the possibilities should they get at least 80% of the goaltending that Quick has given them up to this point.

Right now, they could have sent Igor home for a two week break and not a single eyelash would have been batted. I haven't seen this good of a tandem since Richter and Healy, and these two may even be better.

But the cup isn't won in November and, by March, we'll long forget about this outstanding start to the season. But let me say that it has been a long time for me to see the Rangers this far ahead in the standings as we approach the holidays seasons.

Hoping they enjoy it but come back ready to take on the Devils in Jersey for what will be their biggest matchup of this early season so far.

Peace!

Quote from: Ed Vette on November 12, 2023, 10:33:54 PMThe unexpected shock was the deterioration of the Defense. Zone, Man, Blitz... teams are taking them apart. I think the system is too unconventional and difficult for the players to adjust to and it doesn't suit their strengths, while exposing weaknesses. Thibs in coverage, Safeties in Mike while the Mike is in a mismatch coverage. Soft zones exposed, Cover one is too often Cover Zero. Few turnovers and no pressure for stretch's of games.

I don't think he's back next year.

I agree, Ed, in that we're likely going to see a new defensive coordinator next year. It's too bad because there has been some good development of individual players in the secondary.

But we can't ignore the obvious in that it is broken at the systematic level and it is unlikely another draft will improve things considerably.

I think Schoen should do all he can to clean out as much salary cap as possible and target specific talent who will strategically, as well as tactically, be part of the team for a long time that they can build around. They have a few folks on defense whom they can do just that. On offense, some less obvious folks.

We shall see who will be playing for their job next year. But a good portion of the players we watched today won't be among those we'll see.

What a thriller of a game; however, they fell into the Columbus trap of letting them get physical and take control of the game. But it was the referees who did the most damage. First they did Lindgren a gross injustice by changing a boarding major to a minor. Lindgren wasn't heard from the rest of the game. The second, when the Rangers thought they tied the score at three each in the second period, disallowed the tying goal after a six and a half minute review.

It just looked like they were off a step tonight and Columbus has their number this year. But Laf's goal with 10 seconds left in the game restored faith in the magic of this season, so far, and going on to win in the shootout was a dream come true.

They can enjoy the week while getting ready for the Devils on Saturday.

Quote from: bighitterdalama on November 12, 2023, 07:40:41 PMThey were trying to get Shepherd a touchdown. Five passes in the end zone to Shepherd.
That was a redemption, of sorts, for both Shepard AND the coach in that his team kept fighting to the end.

Still, an ugly showing despite being overmatched from the get-go.

Thank goodness it's over! Onto the Ranger game!

Quote from: andrew_nyGiants on November 12, 2023, 07:00:29 PMThe day that Rozelle intervened between Wellington & Tim to "suggest" they hire George Young turned out to be one of the greatest days in Giants history.

The current state of this franchise especially considering the past 10 years feels like it needs a similar intervention.

The Maras need someone to tell them that their glory years happened in spite of and not because of them.

Andrew,

I nominate you as the reincarnation of old Pete himself.

Now that you're the commish, just who in football circles do you recommend for the job of Young/Perkins/Simms part deux?

Those days are long over and we're not getting them back. The only thing you should hope for is that the Mara family decides to sell their interest and a new controlling interest in the team runs the show differently.

But should that day come to fruition, be careful what you asked for.

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on November 12, 2023, 07:17:59 PMThey're non-competitive. "Any given Sunday" doesn't apply to them. I have zero faith in them to beat anyone.

The non-competitive part is a bad sign. Watching the Cowboys yuck it up on the sideline while the Giants bench is amok in arguments, then players walking away when senior players are trying to talk with them (e.g. Slayton walking away from Shepard). It's a red flag look that will get a coach fired no matter what happened last season. If we start seeing the players tune out the coaches, then it could very well be the end for this staff, hard to believe after all the turmoil the last 13 seasons.

No walks in the park, as this game wasn't decided until the empty net goal, but the Rangers kept the Wild tamed throughout the game by neutralizing their tough, grind it out play with some of their own. It's a style I'm not sure they'd win much of last season, especially in front of goal.

Domingue sealed the win with a beautiful save right in front of him when a Ranger defenseman went behind the goal to take on the puck handler, and left his opponent open in front of goal. That's at least twice I've noticed that and twice Ranger goalies have made great saves. When your farm team goalie gets called up, and helps deliver a win with one goal against, you can say the Rangers are getting great mileage out of their goalies so far. But the Defense is a story that is becoming one of the highlights in this early season so far.

A nice couple of days before taking Columbus to the woodshed on Sunday.

Peace!

Well, they took care of Minnesota tonight, and with Louie Domingue called up from Hartford and put on a great show with 26 saves.

Panarin extends his scoring streak to 13 consecutive games. Trocheck also adding another goal and assist and Lafrenere a goal and assist.

The second period was the head scratcher as the Rangers were outshot 11-1, I believe, and couldn't keep pace with the Wild. That they only gave up a single goal was huge and they responded in the first two minutes of third with the game winner.

10-2-1 to start the season and second only to Boston in the conference. They are a fun team to watch and I hope it continues.

On a separate note, did any of you watch the Devils-Avs game on Tuesday after the Rangers finished? The Avs won but the Devils kept it interesting for a while. I hope Colorado bounces back so we can see the Elite matchup of the Rangers and Avs at their best when they play late in the season.

Peace!

Quote from: Ed Vette on November 09, 2023, 02:04:48 PMI too felt the pain.

I still remember the handling of Simms' benching in 1991, his injury in 1992, his redemption in 1993 and his shocking release in 1994 in leading up to his jersey retirement halftime. The man is still bitter about it today and every time this subject gets brought up I have to fight back tears in writing this because our tough, valiant knight, unconquerable, determined to be the final man standing in the end. Indeed, he was, as he was given a night to be the martyr, for all he had done for a football organization that was about to go into a downward spiral, for a while, as he was being placed on a pedestal for all to see as the standard of the very definition of what "tough guy" was all about in those days. They might have called time on his career, but they couldn't take away his achievements which he worked so hard and so long for.

Consider this. There was a point in history when Phil Simms was mentioned in the same breath as the great Joe Montana.  For those of you who were too young to be involved in that era, Montana was a god-like entity in this Bill Walsh fabled land called Camelot. But as the Giants eventually overwhelmed the 49ers with their amazing defense, and the offensive line blew the 49ers off the line for Joe Morris and Lee Rouson to run roughshod over them, they then had to contend with this #11 guy who made their all-star secondary spin around 'til they were dizzy in trying to stop the likes of dangerous receivers such as ... Stacy Robinson, Bobby Johnson, Lionel Manuel, Phil McConkey. Oh yes, there IS that one legendary figure, Mark Bavaro, who was Phil's go-to target. But Simms completely out-dueled Montana in 1985 and 1986 over a span of three games where Simms tossed a total of eight (8) TDs to Montana only one (1). Camelot lay in complete ruins after the '86 Divisional Playoff 49-3 thrashing in Giants Stadium. But when it was all said and done in Pasadena, CA, our #11 made history as the very first Super Bowl MVP going to Disneyland / Disneyworld. How sweet it was!

Phil never climbed back to the top of the Everest of the game again, despite his teammates carrying him up there one final time in 1990 after he injured his foot. He missed games in every season following the magical 1986 campaign but still led the Giants to winning football four more times and the playoffs three more times. His renaissance final season of 1993 is remembered for how efficient he played and his leadership nearly was enough to will a vastly inferior Giants team to a divisional championship over the best team in football at the time, the Cowboys. He should have been voted the NFL MVP for all the intangible things he meant to the Giants and to the NFL at a time when New York was hurting football-wise and the final curtain call for he and LT was one of the great stories of 1993.

He will likely stay on the outer fringe of the Hall of Fame. So be it. You can look no further than the Giants' Ring of Honor where you will see his name and his number 11 displayed for all to see from here until the end of time. Within the Giants' Legacy Club, you can see the bust of the "Great Phil Simms," as his old head coach describes him. He belongs to us, the "Old Giants Stadium" faithful who were there when he started his first full game against an undefeated Tampa Bay team, that would eventually make it to the NFC Championship game, and Simms and Billy Taylor beat them (NOTE: ironically, Simms also beat the NFC Champion that year, the LA Rams, in Los Angeles, for the Giants' first win in LA in 20 years at that point). If you watched the Cardinals' game earlier this season, and noticed a bunch of #11 jerseys all in a row, that was myself and my family.

Phil Simms was a quarterback for the people of North Jersey at a time when a tough quarterback was needed. We gave him grief when we thought he wasn't showing that toughness but we sure had his back when he did. He lives in our folklore because of it and that's why, as he said in his 1995 speech, "I will always, remember, the Giant fans."

Peace!
