Wink leaked info to the press midseason when he was upset via his "guys" (who had no real football background other than being his sycophants). That was it for him and rightfully should have been. Wink has now managed to politic his way out of two NFL jobs. Best of luck to him at Michigan.

Quote from: Stringer Bell on March 20, 2024, 11:12:17 AMI wouldn't have an issue, necessarily, with Odunze as the pick. Like Banks last year, Odunze is the guy I targeted early on as a preferred Giants pick.

But if I'm honest, I do find it a bit troubling to be picking WR3 with a pick as high as #6. When picking that high, you're usually getting the top guy at a position (or maybe 2 or 3 at QB). So even though I like Odunze as a player, part of me is down on the value we'd be getting picking the 3rd best guy at a less-premium position.

I generally get this sentiment, but it doesn't account for years with particularly strong classes (and I think the sentiment is WR this year is just that). If Odunze would be a top WR in other years but-for the presence of MHJ, getting the "3rd best" in a class is relatively meaningless. It seems like selecting between Nabers and Odunze comes down to preference thing, so they're more 2A and 2B.

I agree its kind of a strange deal in some ways... but just look at these top "overpays." Singletary isn't close to the range of the others--its $9.5MM guaranteed over 3 years! If he plays out the contract, you can guarantee he's been more valuable than that to the team. I strongly disagree that this is paying him like a "lead back in his prime." Just look at Saquon's deal by comparison ($12MM+ per year)--that's a lead back being paid entering his prime (and with a litany of health issues). Singletary is less than half that!

And while they criticize Singletary for never being a lead back, I have to imagine part of the willingness to give him money is precisely because he doesn't have a lot of wear on his body.

I think its fine and all to be critical of the deal, but this analysis seems misguided.

Quote from: katkavage on March 19, 2024, 12:01:55 PMIt is very very strange the love for Jones the player. He really has shown nothing spectacular or even close in his five years with the Giant. Am I missing something? I'm still waiting for him to beat a good team...or even have a decent game against a good team. Is it all about beating an average Minnesota team in the playoffs? If so, why wasn't the following game thrown into the mix when Jones was dreadful against a real good team? The whole thing is bizarre. Is it because he was a first round pick (even though the guy who picked him is gone) that the owner doesn't want to admit a mistake? I just don't see anything close to greatness in his game. And now with the injuries???

He looks the part, is non-offensive (read: milquetoast), and people don't want to have to start over at QB. He "flashes" (like any other player good enough to make it to the NFL). I really don't think it's that complex.

Tyrod was 5.5MM for the last two years. Lock's contract is a push as a cap concern and completely acceptable for a backup QB with some starting experience.

Listen to the timeframe Papa is quoting Daboll from: "... it was the playoff year, but early in the season." So we're talking mid-2022 season when Jones was executing the offense. Tellingly, this is not from anytime during or post-2023 when Daboll openly showed immense frustration with Jones on the sideline and made telling comments in post-game pressers.

Sorry, not buying this.

The implication that Jones has basically been short changed because he only played six games last year makes zero sense. Part of the reason they may want to move on is precisely because of DJ's unavailability. And not once in this two minute segment did he say anything about DJ's skills (or his continued lack of processing ability in year 5). Pretty telling Riddick can't muster an actual compliment for Jones and just runs wild with Mara's comment about his golden boy.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 03, 2024, 09:11:44 AMMcCarthy didn't run the 40 but he did run the Short Shuttle and the 3 cone.  His times were excellent and suggest his 40 time will be in the low 4.5s

Short Shuttle- 4.23

3 Cone- 6.82

His 3-Cone is 5th amongst all participants. Impressive.

He's fine, but the 49ers had an elite group of skill-position players. I think if you swapped him and Mahomes this game isn't close.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Shane Bowen our new DC

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 06, 2024, 09:26:35 AMIn 2020 Vabrel didn't even have a coach with the defensive coordinator title.   Bowen got the title the next season, but that seems like a strong indicator that Vabrel was very involved with running the defense.

In the 2020 season without a DC, the Titans ranked 24th in scoring. The next season with Bowen as DC, 6th. If anything, there's a correlation between Vrabel helming defenses and underperformance. So I'm still not convinced that failing to get him is a miss or that Bowen is a bad hire. Milquetoast? Sure. But 2 months ago no one knew Dennard Wilson's name, and now failing to secure him is a most lamentable tragedy. I just am not going to get bent out of shape about most of this stuff when Bowen ticks most boxes... except "exciting," apparently.

Quote from: Ed Vette on February 05, 2024, 10:21:53 PMYes, a DC whose experience was as a LB Coach, micromanaged by Vrabel. At least the Run Defense will be shored up.

What evidence is there that Vrabel micromanaged him? I don't know where this notion that Vrabel himself is/was a defensive guru comes from. His sole season as a defensive play caller saw his Texans defense as league worst in scoring. Maybe Bowen was an alright coordinator in spite of Vrabel? If Vrabel was such a a great coach (with a barely .500 career record) why is he unemployed?

To be clear, I don't really care about the Bowen hire. I think the Giants played it relatively safe. But you could have said the same thing about the Wink hire and now people are bemoaning his departure. Simple facts are Bowen has piloted top defenses in the past. Quite possible he fails, but I don't get the reckless negativity.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Matt Miller Giants QB rumor

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 05, 2024, 12:32:09 PMIt's possible but Minshew has been like this pretty much his whole NFL career.  He will have games that are really impressive, and you wonder why he isn't a starter, then he will have games that strongly remind you why he isn't an NFL starter.

Not saying I disagree with the conclusion that he ultimately is a fringe-starter, but there may be someone out there willing to bridge a gap with him at the helm after the season he had.

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 05, 2024, 12:08:23 PMThe Colts have a ton of cap space, and Richardson had a season-ending injury in the middle of his rookie season.   It seems unlikely the team will not retain him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he played himself into a starting role somewhere.

The Giants are trying to get out of the QB contact, not dive into a longer one.
