Greg Cossell was raving about Damarious Randall this morning.   He also did not like Landon Collins one bit.  Said he was too heavy and heavy footed.

Check out the video's at Draft Breakdown and see what conclusions you draw.

I had a couple of ASU games taped DB don't have up but if you want to see why I have tempered my enthusiasm on Randall take a look at the Oregon State game on there. Some of his run fits in that game are horrendous!

Ceri - Do you have any thoughts about Byron Jones out of Connecticut as a free safety as he played safety at UCONN his first two years there before converting to safety?  He's 6'1" 199 pounds, runs a sub 4.4x 40 and broke the world record for the broad jump?

Thinking he's a CB. Not done much work on those and not seen him during the season. Preview on CB's won't be before Sunday

Good read as always Ceri. Just like cam Erving in the guard review we're on the same wavelength regarding Preston Smith. He's on my wish list but I have this nagging feeling he'll be taken late in the 1st considering the lack of tradition 4-3 DEs in the draft this year. Is it safe to assume from their absences that you don't think much of Za'darius Smith and Anthony Chikillo?

I also think Smith will be gone. It's one very big reason why I favour going DE first. DE's aren't going to last long as their aren't many of them. Their will be good OL's still available at #40.

As far as Za'darius Smith and Chickillo go, I'm not of the opinion that either will be a starter or that they'll upgrade our pass rush. We have depth, what we're missing is a second two-way player or a speedy outside pass rush specialist.

The Giants have a clear prototype for DE but few top prospects fit their mold this year and they are second tier types with good all-around games rather than the type who can consistently terrorize passers off the edge. That said, a couple of them can rush the passer equally as well from the inside so might appeal in Spagnuolo's defense.

What do I think the Giants should do?

Good work Ceri!   :ok:  None of these guys really excite me as a pick at 9.  If one were to slip to the second round of the questionable fit list, they might be worth a pick.   The small school prospects are intriguing and one of them would be a nice day 3 pick.

Yea picking any of these guys at 9 is throwing away a pick on a rotational guy with issues.

Think you missed the point completely  :P

I'd happily take Beasley or Ray at #9.

You said that he lacks strength and ability to disengage in the run game and lacks consistency as a pass rusher.

Why would you take that with the 9th pick?

For Beasley u said he goes through periods where he's non existent on the field, not effective against the run, takes bad angles and he's not a great tackler.

I don't think I missed anything, lol, neither of these guys seems like a pick at 9.

You're basically saying that these guys aren't capable of being a 3 down lineman in a 4-3 system. I don't think it's wise to take a player like that at 9, doesn't make any sense.

Grab a rotational guy in the middle rounds. It's not like these guys aren't filled with holes as is, why at 9?

Look under 'the talent available'. It says it all.

It's not about just this year, it's about years to come. Plenty of 'finished products' will start year one and never get any better. The guys I like I'd bet on being impactive for years. The Giants don't draft 'finished products'!

There are a number of edge rushers in this draft who will be taken high in the draft, the majority of which will be selected by teams playing the 3-4 defense but some who could be considered

Guys just seem to grown in the NFL.  Can he gain 15 pounds without losing speed?  Isn't Aaron Donald playing the 3 Tech at something like 290?

Indeed Donald is but then he was a lot better as a run defender in college than Bennett has been. Bennett will undoubtedly gain weight but whether it helps is another matter.

Your point is well taken Ceri.  We have to stop the run first and take that element away from an offense.  Can Bennett become a better run stopping DT?  I think he certainly has the aggressiveness to do it as he is a 100% motor guy.  What would be the reason to think he can't?

Size. He played closer to 280lb's in college and I look at the OL in Dallas and wonder how he will fare against them considering he didn't fare that well against college competition

I guess my feeling is that if teams are now playing nickel and dime defenses as base units given the much higher level of passing, then isn't it more important now to have a 3 Tech to be a pass rusher to help take away a QB stepping into this throws?  For that reason, I love Michael Bennett as he has been extremely productive as a 3 Tech.

If we could stop the run I'd agree with you. But how much was it Fewell's scheme and how much was it inept run defense from the players still here?

I haven't mentioned Bennett in a while, but for months I've been hoping he would become temporarily invisible and fall to pick 40 where he could be reunited with his college D-line mate Jonathan Hankins.

This man has NY GIANTS written all over him, in so many ways.

Bob

You're not the only one thinking that way. Brian (BigHitta) wants him bad for the same reason.
