Quote from: Philosophers on January 19, 2025, 03:28:30 PMWe had guys on the cheap at DT and it didnt work.

... or, famously, we traded them to other teams (usually the Vikings) or outright released them for no compensation. I seem to remember one guy even would up with the Eagles, although I think whoever he was is long gone. Bob

Quote from: Jclayton92 on January 19, 2025, 12:00:26 PMa run stuffing DT is cheap though, if we were to trade for good one it'd likely cost us a 5th rd pick, not number 3 overall where the value conversation comes back in.

J: The difference between you and me regarding Graham is that I don't see him as just a run-stopper, although he is very good at that. I see him more like Hutchinson of the Lions, and I think (but am not certain) he can be that good. BOb

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 10, 2025, 02:03:36 PMIt's sort of funny.  I was so upset at the prospect of the Giants beating the Eagle's backups that I contemplated putting some money on the Giants to win so that at least I would have money to offset the pain of the loss.   Fortunately for me, inertia (i.e., laziness) prevented me from setting up the account and placing my wager (which was the closest thing to a sure thing for me)

I like it! It's the type of thing that has occurred to me, but I never tried it. Bob

Quote from: Philosophers on January 18, 2025, 04:48:14 PMI dont see DT as not a premium position.  If we draft someone who changes our rush D to where we are holding offenses to under 4.0 ypc and are generating interior pass pressure, then we just tipped the balance in favor of the D.

Phil: That's my line of thinking, too. We somehow stunk defending against the run despite Dexter Lawrence and IMO a solid job by Thibodeaux. Putting Mason Graham into the DL along with those two guys would, again IMO, do more for the team than adding Abdul Carter, although I won't be unhappy if we take either one. Bob

Quote from: Jclayton92 on January 18, 2025, 02:17:49 PMIt's the value for me Bob, if the guy isn't the next Aaron Donald then the value just isn't there. A top 5 pick needs  to be at a premium position so we hopefully get elite play at a discount.

J: Can't say I disagree.

As I said in other topics, it's also a boring pick, given the other prospects who are available.

Which is why I believe he will be high on the Giants' list. lol

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Tomlin for the #1 pick

Quote from: LennG on January 18, 2025, 12:16:58 PMIf  I may ask--WHY?

Most posters had the same answer as you but in my eyes, one hell of a coach is worth more than a high draft pick. Tomlin may be one of the top 3 HCs today and in my eyes, that is wth more than any draft pick who may or may not be good.

I know it will never happen, but I would really like to know why all said no?

Lenn: What do you think of my approach (posted somewhere above). My first thought was "no way" because a player like LT (for example) can really change things fast, and a really high pick is where you get guys like Lawrence Taylor.

But I tried to come up with a "middle ground" because I (like you) think a whole lot of Tomlin.

So it occurred to me that if the two best players (non-QB) in the draft are taken one-two, that could be a trigger that might cause the Giants to consider offering Pick Three to the Steelers in exchange for their excellent head coach (assuming he would come to their IMO "questionable" organization lol).

Quote from: Ed Vette on January 18, 2025, 09:51:49 AMThere are 34 UFA QBs out there. They all are meh, except Darnold. Then there's the Fields and Daltons/Brissets level. Then Lock and the rest. Still, all these know-it-all Bloggers have the Giants making a deal for Cousins. God forbid.

They will draft a QB somewhere. I think they jump for Dart and Co., and then one of these FA guys.

Ed: Finally, we differ (a bit) on something relating to QB's. See my note posted shortly after yours. Bob

I don't like any of the free agent QB's who are available. Why not? Because they are available.

That's not as "Groucho Marx" as it sounds. Most years, there's a better-than-half-decent guy whose contract is up and there's at least some doubt about whether his current team might want to move on, or maybe the QB himself wants to move on (for whatever reason).

This year, other than maybe Wilson from Denver, I don't see anyone young enough or good enough to waste any time on, and Wilson will IMO definitely NOT be interested in coming to the East Coast.  Only Kirk Cousins, who is likely to become a free agent because the Falcons owe him $10M unless he's cut, interests me, and if he knows what's good for him (and IMO he does) he won't come to the Giants because our offensive line is still unsettled. Maybe the Jets are interested in him. At least their OL is a bit better than half-decent.

Quote from: MrGap92 on January 15, 2025, 08:46:40 PMf you are the GM or Head Coach, how do you hold yourself accountable?

Mr.G: I think you're probably asking the wrong question, at least with regard to the the NFL.

The pay is (in a sense) insanely high so there's temptation to not even consider how (or whether) to hold yourself accountable. It's tempting to simply avoid considering the issue you're talking about

Whether it's ego or greed, some (or all?) GM's and head coaches seem to be governed by the primary goal of not losing their jobs (rather than anything requiring self-reflection, IMO.

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 17, 2025, 07:42:24 PMYes, Banks was excellent at sticking with his man

Rich: Makes sense, because the criticism is that he usually knows how to get to the right spot on the field but doesn't know what to do when he gets there. lol  That's how most erstwhile wide receivers become d-backs. It's usually hands of stone, or lack of ability to high-point or located the ball in the air. Bob

Does third in average target separation mean third LEAST separation?

You guys know that games are played on both Saturday and Sunday???

My prediction is the SB will be from the winners in Sunday's games.

Tim: I was aware of that, but there are still four different combinations that fit your statement:

(1) Rams, Bills; (2) Rams, Ravens; (3) Eagles, Bills; (4) Eagles, Ravens.

What you're really saying is: in both Conference Championships, there's no way either team who wins on Saturday can defeat either team who wins on Sunday.
