Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 20, 2024, 05:53:21 PMLenn,

I am with you that Belichick can still be a good if not great coach. That part doesn't particularly concern me. My concern with him is on the roster building side. He really did a horrible job there in his later years in NE and left that roster in absolute shambles. Many of his draft picks were shocking. That was 100% on him because he was singularly in charge. I cannot see any way Belichick would agree to come to the Giants and just be the coach and not insist on having a major say in the roster, if not the final say. Based on the results in NE once he lost Brady, I'm not sure I want that being brought to the Giants, even with him being a great coach.

That's where we disagree. Again, this is just my opinion, but I think he knows he has one more chance to get the record for most wins and I also think he knows that he is getting on in years and doing both jobs, HC and GM may be in the past. Yes, he has always been a control freak, but age takes its toll. If he believes in the GM, I think he could/would concentrate on building a team on the field.

I agree his drafts have been awful and who knows if Mara even wants him here. I can see him in Dallas, but there he will always have Jerrah there to look over his shoulder, so I doubt that. I still think the Giants are a good fit for me and he will bring some much needed football knowledge to this team.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on November 20, 2024, 04:26:07 PMI mean the cowboys are considering Deion or Belichick, is that really better than what we have currently?

I may be wrong, but I would still take BB in a heartbeat. Give him a decent enough QB and he can still be a hell of a coach, at least IMVHO. If I had to choose between Daboll and BB, you know where I lean. Daboll might be OK and he may prove to be a better than he has shown coach, but BB is the GOAT.

The problem with some of this reasoning is that we don't want to stretch for a QB who may, or may not, be 'the guy'. We could end up with another Daniel Jones type and we'd be screwed for another 5 years. If we pass on a QB and opt for BPA, say a CB, and we go with a journeyman as a bridge, who says we come anywhere near being able to draft a top guy come 2026? People say go after Darnold, well Darnold might win 8-10 games here and where would that put us for looking ahead?

And, we had absolutely no chance at the top 3 guys the past year. None of the top 3 teams that drafted QBs were going to opt out and bypass their chance at the franchise guy. Just because we wanted in, doesn't mean we were able to. Personally, when I knew those top 3 would be gone, I really wanted Nix. They said he was pro-ready and he could have waited until Jones screwed up and then it would have been his team.

We, as fans, wish for a lot of things, but, in reality, we probably won't have a shot at them.

Well another great series in the book as I just finished Tulsa King this AM. A terrific second season and better than season 1.
This role was meant for Sly as was Rocky. If he is your thing, you will simply love this series. If not, watch something else because he is the entire show.

Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on November 19, 2024, 09:50:40 PMI love Wegmans, but it's too big...unless you have a day or afternoon to waste, and you brought a substantial amount of money. I've perfected getting in and out in less than a few minutes - getting two types of sushi - then browsing the fresh fish and beef departments. I usually (used to anyway) grab a fresh tuna steak or swordfish steak, but at 40-some dollars per pound now, not so often. The filet Mignon steaks, strip steaks, etc., that don't sell on day one, they vacuum seal and sell them the next day, for about half price and that's where I end up getting beef...unless I'm entertaining guests, then I splurge. Usually in and out in less than 10 minutes. Sometimes I grab a Beef'n Wick sandwich and split...like yesterday when I was in Syracuse. They have everything imaginable in the store, but it's pricey and Weiss, Tops, Price Chopper, and even Aldi's has pretty good vegetables for a lot less than Wegmans, without overwhelming crowds. What Wegmans does, is a fantastic job of presentation of unlimited varieties of fruits and veggies...not necessarily more tasty than other stores. I'm used to them as there have been Wegmans in Binghamton, Ithaca, and Syracuse for many years...and I'm about equidistant from each of those cities, although usually I go to the one in Binghamton. Selection is unsurpassed by any grocery store in the world, but along with unlimited selections, great presentation, etc., is large crowd chaos   That's the one downside IMO

People rave on and on about Trader Joes, but I don't get the obsession.

The worst thing about Wegmans is their urinals. When I use them, I get urine everywhere!

Worst urinals ever

I'm sure you were saying this tongue in cheek, but you do know what goes into those machines. At least I hope so.  =))  =))  =))  =))

I'm sure you have explored things about this illness. I was having lunch with a friend today and happened to mention you and the doctor's report. My friend is also a cancer survivor and he said to me that I should tell you to jump on the first plane to NY and see other doctors. NY has some of the world's best doctors, especially at Sloan Kettering and other world-famous hospitals. Maybe someone can help when others think all is lost. I don't know, but I have heard many stories of people who were told to sort of get their affairs in order and they outlive the prognosis.
I don't know if this is possible, but I look at it as what have you got to lose. Please try and explore all options if there are any, but NY is the place for things like this.

Quote from: T200 on November 19, 2024, 03:03:42 PMAre we so sure the boat is sinking?

Offensively, we have better talent and aside from Thomas (which is a huge loss) we have remained pretty healthy.

We haven't missed Saquon's production as we've seen promise from Tracy. We've also seen a few bright spots from the TE.

Defense has been up and down and needs to be stabilized.

I agree with Schoen that we have a roster to be more competitive that our record shows. The cupboard isn't bare my any means but we do need more pieces to start and for depth.

I agree 100%. But I'm sure, the person who has disagreed with me for the last 20 years will disagree with your comments also.

As I have said before, I am always a glass-half-empty guy and never jump on any bandwagon until I see it with my own eyes. What I do see on the Giants is the start of a core of players who we can win with. Our offense could be potent with a real NFL-caliber QB. We need a bit of an upgrade on the OL but we had WRs, we have a RB, and hopefully a TE. We do need some help on defense, but our DL is good, we have 2 maybe 3 good LBers and we have the makings of a decent defensive backfire ld. This is where we need to concentrate after solving the QB issue. With a real NFL-caliber QB, we can compete and, hopefully improve. Because of said QB, we have t he record we have, no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Sadly yes, but not to a few on this board who made sure everyone knew every mistake Eli made and were thrilled when he was gone. Sure, the new guy was better, Daniel Jones. Ask a few of them now and they will still insist Jones had the ability to be better.
In a pig's arse.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 19, 2024, 11:50:52 AMLOL, I have known Len for over 20 years, and I can't recall a single point over that period when I agreed with him.  So, I think you picked the wrong person to cite in support of your position (at least when discussing it with me)

I will add something that struck me.  @T200 in the Giants dropped from 2nd pick in the draft thread about the randomness and unpredictable nature of the draft and predicting the success and failures of NFL players when pointing out (correctly, in my opinion) that we shouldn't take Bill Belichick's commentary as fact.  Suppose we accept that Bill Belichick's views shouldn't be accepted as fact despite his nearly unmatched football acumen. Why would a single belief about a player (with many outside variables involved) suddenly prove (or disprove) the football acumen of a particular poster?

Again, this is my worldview, but football acumen is hard-earned. It takes time and effort to learn the game of football at a higher level.  Suggesting that saying a quarterback is a bum proves you are a football expert, which is akin to declaring one a roulette expert because you put your money on Red 8 and you won.  Still, this extreme focus on right or wrong is why so many conversations are contentious rather than cooperative.

I will also strongly disagree with your efforts to deny what I said at the time of the contract, as I am not in the habit of lying.

That is your loss.

John

I am so sorry to hear this news. Truly. We have know each other, over the years, for quite a long time and like some others loved the time I finally got to meet you in person
Gosh I can still see and taste that fish you brought to our BBQ.
I remember our on line posts about the Golden Hoofer, Gabe's. Good times.

If we don't meet again in this lifetime I will make it a point to contact you in the next.

You will be in my prayers.

God bless you.

Ok so no one really wants to say it, I will and I really don't care what some might think.
I Told You So.
I hated the pick right from that dreadful day whatever number of years ago. But as a fan I did root for Jones to be successful, week after week. I listened to all the excuses made for him and I rooted when I thought they were corrected.
In my mind I never ever believed Jones would be a franchise QB. I didn't just jump on the bandwagon, I was there from day one.
Yes he is a good guy, a hard worker but so are many players who just don't have the talent to make it in the NFL, why aren't you feeling sorry for them?
Being a good guy and a hard worker only carry you so far. Talent makes it in the NFL and Jones is devoid of what really makes a QB stand apart from his peers.
Do I wish him well, of course just anyplace other than on the Giants. Am I being cruel maybe but I feel I have wasted 6 years of my Giant life waiting on him to be good and all I get now is sorry for the guy.
Like the other QB we once had from Duke, glad you're leaving.

Quote from: todge on November 18, 2024, 04:27:50 PMThis organization is an embarrassment and it's getting worse by the week.

If I'm Jones and his agent, I'm asking for anything to get out of this mess. What are the cap limitations for either trading or releasing Jones.

I'm embarrassed to be a Giants fan now.

I think even his agent may drop him because he won't be earning very much after this.

I agree that I am also embarrassed to be a Giants fan now, but not because of the front office, but because he may be the biggest flop at QB since Ryan Leaf was drafted, and people thought he could play also. I still remember him bouncing around the league with several coaches thinking they could spin gold out of straw with him. The same will happen to Jones, he will bounce around, maybe get to start a game or two here and there, maybe even win a few games if he falls to a good team, but overall, he was well paid, over well paid for someone who didn't deserve it.

I still remember you citing over and over that there were several teams ready to pounce on him if we didn't draft him at 6. I never believed that for a moment, and only company man Phil Simms ran with that. But, if there were other teams, don't you think they'd be dancing in the street that they didn't draft him?

You are embarrassed to be a Giants fan now, maybe, but more because of their play than anything else.

And you can always switch to the Eagles and root for Barkley.

Not to hijack this topic, but certain large supermarket chains just never get into the NY Metro area. Wegmans was one but hooray, they are opening the fist one on Long Island in a bout a month. A bit far for me to travel for some groceries, but if I am ever in the area, I will visit.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 18, 2024, 01:25:52 PMLen,

It's interesting how angry you got so much that you felt the need to go after me on a personal level just for suggesting the IDEA that Schoen and Daboll be held accountable for their job performance.  I won't disagree that Jones is shot, and it's time to bench him.  I do disagree with your efforts to give Schoen and Daboll a free pass just because they didn't change the QB they inherited.  Hell, Schoen and Daboll even signed Jones to the $40 million per year contract.  From where I stand, it's impressive the mental gymnastics required to blame everything on Jones but not assign any responsibility to the guys who signed Jones to his veteran contract, passed on drafting QB on this draft, and even passed on Russel Wilson and instead signed Drew Lock.   But hey,  you do you Lenny

I have never given Daboll a pass anywhere. I have been on his case basically ever since the kicker game. Personally, I don't think he will ever be a big-time HC. But you are relentless in your criticism of both Daboll and Schoen. T thread after t thread, article after article, you find something you beat it to death. (as some do about Jones)> It just gets monotonous after a while.

Quote from: MrGap92 on November 18, 2024, 11:12:47 AMI also am not so sure ATL has to move on from Cousins cause of Penix.

They have a 5th year option, and with his injury history, redshirting him two years could actually do the guy a world of good. Being on the sidelines for a year or two has proven beneficial for many in the past.

That was the OLD NFL, in today's NFL most high draft picks at QB are thrown to the wolves as soon as they can be. The days of sitting for a year seem to be long gone. Look at basically all the top-drafted QB's are starting now and hopefully improving as the season goes on.
