Quote from: kartanoman on November 20, 2024, 04:49:47 PMOr, everyone comes to the realization that Andrew Thomas is damaged goods, the Left Tackle is a position of need (NOTE: degree of need can be debated, but nobody here has touched that point with a 39 1/2 foot pole, not even the Grinch himself), and the rookie QB you "have to have or else" is beaten to a pulp and on injured reserve shortly into what was a promising career for him. Now, you're down a QB AND the LT all of a sudden becomes the priority need.

I'd take my chances with a one-year free agent, get the best Left Tackle in the nation IF I'm drafting later than pick #3, and deal with a rookie QB in 2026. There's no moving a mountain next year anyway, so build the fortress and hire the knight in shining armor after.

If Thomas can come back 80% of his former self, he will be an excellent depth for the line. But he's a salvage title now and the sooner folks understand what that means, the sooner everyone understands the Left Tackle now becomes, albeit arguably, the most important position on the Giants' team.

Take care of business, GM!

Peace!

AT is top 5 at his position. What they need is a solid swing behind the starters, though I would not be opposed to a longer term RT depending hoe the rest of the season plays out.

Eleumenor also looked solid at LT, and Neal was their highest graded OL in his Bricillo coached debut.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 20, 2024, 01:55:40 PMWhile less impactful, it's worth noting that the number of snaps Lock takes negatively impacts the comp pick formula for NYG

Any idea where we are likely to stand comp wise as of now?

Big Blue Huddle / Re: KT coming off of IR

He will be welcomed back, the run defense took a hit when he went down and that is no coincidence, sacks aren't everything, we have missed him bad.

Follow the Jets lead to get out of this mess? Do you not see how much of a dumpster fire they are?

No thanks

He let us down for six years, and as much as he tried to make the product entertaining, he failed to do so, he tried his ass off, but trying alone doesn't cut it.

If some are relieved, they deserve to be, a new chapter is finally upon us, with Jones there was never much hope or optimism.

I just don't get why being happy is a problem.

Quote from: T200 on November 19, 2024, 03:03:42 PMAre we so sure the boat is sinking?

Offensively, we have better talent and aside from Thomas (which is a huge loss) we have remained pretty healthy.

We haven't missed Saquon's production as we've seen promise from Tracy. We've also seen a few bright spots from the TE.

Defense has been up and down and needs to be stabilized.

I agree with Schoen that we have a roster to be more competitive that our record shows. The cupboard isn't bare my any means but we do need more pieces to start and for depth.
Quote from: LennG on November 19, 2024, 05:04:17 PMI agree 100%. But I'm sure, the person who has disagreed with me for the last 20 years will disagree with your comments also.

As I have said before, I am always a glass-half-empty guy and never jump on any bandwagon until I see it with my own eyes. What I do see on the Giants is the start of a core of players who we can win with. Our offense could be potent with a real NFL-caliber QB. We need a bit of an upgrade on the OL but we had WRs, we have a RB, and hopefully a TE. We do need some help on defense, but our DL is good, we have 2 maybe 3 good LBers and we have the makings of a decent defensive backfire ld. This is where we need to concentrate after solving the QB issue. With a real NFL-caliber QB, we can compete and, hopefully improve. Because of said QB, we have t he record we have, no ifs, ands or buts about it.

I agree with ya'll

NFL Caliber QB gets us competing

There will be needs at RG, Swing, DT, and CB, and they will need to replace Azeez, Slayton, and Pinnock also (I imagine they can resign Pinnock reasonably)

But they have FA and the draft will have more than the QB pick, maybe we get a comp or two? we can address more of these holes/needs, or add depth elsewhere.

Get the QB and we are an offseason away from being a real team.

Quote from: LennG on November 19, 2024, 04:39:42 PMSadly yes, but not to a few on this board who made sure everyone knew every mistake Eli made and were thrilled when he was gone. Sure, the new guy was better, Daniel Jones. Ask a few of them now and they will still insist Jones had the ability to be better.
In a pig's arse.

His 6 years in the NFL, along with his time at Duke, or being a 0 start recruit out of high school, all confirm the pigs arse comment to be true. He was never any good

Great guy, high character, apprecate the effort, just never had the ability.

Quote from: T200 on November 19, 2024, 02:42:33 PMTrue, but we know that was the end of Eli's career.

Sadly

Quote from: T200 on November 19, 2024, 12:32:23 PMWe've been without a franchise QB for the past 6 years. The end of an error is upon us.

Eli has here in his rookie campaign.

Slayton has his best game as a pro with Eli throwing to him  ;)

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Picking DeVito over Lock
November 19, 2024, 02:30:59 PM
What is interesting to me, is many here say how DJ needed support, OL, #1 WR, etc

Why has not one person acknowledged that DeVito too now has a #1 WR? Maybe he will be alot better with one, the OL now is still better than last years too.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 19, 2024, 01:45:54 PMThe current coach of the Pats is also technically a branch on the Belichick tree and his rookie coaching year is going pretty well (considering the level of talent).  Then again, Daboll's rookie coaching season also looked impressive.

To me, I see the Giants as dysfunctional and with a broken culture.  Hiring some younger, hot, first-time head coach is likely to get swallowed up in that dysfunction rather than fix it.  I think the team needs a quality head coach with pelts on the wall who knows what a good culture looks like and has the experience of getting a team to that vision (like Tom Coughlin did when he came here).

I also like Mike Vbrell, who is a pseudo Belichick branch (since he played for him rather than coached under him) as a younger head coach, but he has still shown that he knows how to set the culture for his team.

I wish we were in a position where the team had at least an okay culture, and they could hire the next young hot coordinator, but this team needs more than just a good Xs and Os coach.  They need an experienced alpha with a good vision of how successful football teams operate.

IF Daboll gets fired, and IF we went with a retread. Vrabel would be high on my list in such a scenario.

I just can't get behind Belichick for the reasons I stated, to me it would be a bandaid and not a fix.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 19, 2024, 01:26:02 PMcan't

So that brings me back to my point, if BB were younger, and/or I can have more faith in his succession plan, I would be more on board with him, I don't question his ability too much. It's more long term. If he can't express and share his brilliance, knowledge, call it whatever, in a couple short year, if not immediately, we are back to where we were.

I read, and respect both points, I am just struggling to see how the "next branch" can be successful

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 19, 2024, 01:00:52 PMDoes the man who owns 8 Super Bowl Rings (2 as DC and 6 as HC) be allowed to coach the Giants.   :hmm:

To the point about 2 years, I think the reason you bring in a Bill Belichick is to fix a broken culture.  Since we know he is shot term you create a succession plan.

I understand, between Judge and his tree as a whole with HCs, why should anyone fee confident in any succession plan of his?

What about in 2 years when he is ready to hang em up for good?

Should the guy who gave the Giants a personal recommendation to hire Joe Judge, be allowed to make another?

Big Blue Huddle / Thank You Daniel Jones

I know many of us have various opinions, and ultimately, things didn't pan out as we had hoped with DJ. But, despite where any of us stand, it deserves acknowledgment, that while it was not meant to be, DJ did work as hard as he could, gave it everything he had to become good at the sport, and he certainly was tough (not everyone recovers from the types of injuries he had, especially as quickly). He may not have ever been the guy, and it all may not have ever translated to on field success, but his work ethic and the effort he put in to try to be successful, should not be up for debate regardless of it not working out.

No hard feelings, he should make a fine backup elsewhere, maybe even a bridge starter both roles are a better fit for his skill level. I wish him the best in whatever the future holds. There will be differing opinions on talent or lack thereof, but he at least had the work ethic and character of a Giant. As a person, he is as good of one as they come, which deserves recognition.
