OJ Anderson, Dave DeBusschere, and Butch Goering.  Three key guys who turned good NY teams into champions.

I'm ambivalent about Reggie, but I'm not putting him on my list, noting that the Yankees were a much better team than any of the other three, having made the World Series the year before he arrived.  And unlike my 3 he had already won multiple championships and an MVP before arriving.  My list is more one of good but not great players who you wouldn't necessarily have thought would put you over top.  For me, Reggie was a great player who came to town and put the near great Yankees over the top. As compared to my guys who were good players who came to good teams and made them great.  No MVPs or prior championships there.

And I can't speak too much to Messier because I was out of NY for 10 years when he arrived and was never a Rangers fan, and didn't follow them at all.  Frankly I associate him far more with the Oilers who ended my Islanders' dynasty.  Plus, unlike Reggie and my three, he didn't get them multiple championships, just the one.  And again, like Reggie, more of an acknowledged great player with multiple championships and MVPs behind him before arrived.

So on balance, for me, they fall into a different category than my three.  If you add them to the list it becomes a different list, IMO.

I can definitely understand and respect that. I knew we'd probably conflict with the Isles-Rangers dynamic anyway, but so be it. They most certainly would make my list as they brought championships to their respective clubs for the first time since I've been born and with Ottis helping bring the Giants in and Dave the Knickerbockers, that's my list unless we wish to expand it further to add Pele and the old NASL's New York Cosmos and the 1977 Soccer Bowl Championship.

Also, if I were a tad bit older, I'd probably be exactly on the same page as you. But the powers that be had me come down here in the Spring of 1969 without too much say in the process (NOTE: at least I think so, but they make you drink the potion that makes you forget that part, right? Uh, who knows, who cares, here we are, enjoy the ride, etc, etc.). At least I made it here in time to see Armstrong touch ground on the moon. Now that one, even in my diapers, was an event which inspired my future endeavors and continues to do so in my profession to this day and, hopefully, into retirement in a decade or so.

I don't think our difference has anything to do with generation or Islander/Ranger dynamic tension at all.  When you bring in MVP level, Championship level, players to very good teams it is hardly surprising if they win championships with their new team.  When you bring in good, but not heretofore great players into a good team and the fit and chemistry is such that the team becomes multiple times Champions, THAT is surprising and unexpected.  We just have different criteria for our respective lists.

I remember being very excited when they got him, but he didn't play much his first few years here. After they let Joe Morris go, Anderson became the regular RB and had a couple of good years. I always felt that other than Scott Norwood, no one stood out from that game. Anderson's running, Hostetler's play and the defense were enough to keep the game close. Anderson was MVP because someone had to get the car or go to Disneyland or whatever to satisfy the sponsors.

I know this name won't generate a lot of attention, but add Butch Goring to that list. If anyone doesn't know the name, Goring was traded to the NY Islanders and they went on to win 4 Stanley Cups in a row.

As the lone Islanders fan here I am fully aware of his impact after being a trade deadline acquisition in 1980 who would win 4 Stanley Cups. He contributed more than OJ in 86 being that Morris got 20+ carries a game and didn't miss a game while Goring was on the PK and was the 3rd line Center. It took 3 years for OJ to really contribute.
