His commentary on the 1990 NFL "America's Game" film is pure gold.

I still remember Parcells in a press conference when asked why Hampton wasn't playing more. He said Hampton averages about 3-4 yards a carry. Anderson gets 3-4 yards a carry. Do you understand the difference?

Anderson was MVP but the best player on the field that day was Thurman Thomas. Dear Lord. Thank God they didn't give it to him more.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant - Robert McCloskey (if he were on this Forum)

Quote from: LennG on October 09, 2024, 07:40:28 PMI know this name won't generate a lot of attention, but add Butch Goring to that list. If anyone doesn't know the name, Goring was traded to the NY Islanders and they went on to win 4 Stanley Cups in a row.

Check the OP (well, not the OP, but my first post in the thread where I highlight OJ, Butch, and Debusschere).  He was one of the three I named.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Quote from: TDToomer on October 09, 2024, 07:48:49 PMAs the lone Islanders fan here I am fully aware of his impact after being a trade deadline acquisition in 1980 who would win 4 Stanley Cups. He contributed more than OJ in 86 being that Morris got 20+ carries a game and didn't miss a game while Goring was on the PK and was the 3rd line Center. It took 3 years for OJ to really contribute.

While I really don't follow hockey any more, I was a rabid Islander fan back in the day from their inception.  That team that won 4 Stanley Cups was a joy to watch.

In fairness, Thomas (who was a great player) did extra-great that day because the Giants defensive game plan, drawn up by Belichik (it sits in the HOF now) was to attack the Bills passing game and their receivers and pretty much let Thomas run. "In order for us to win this game, Thurman Thomas has to gain 100 yards", Belichik famously told his players (as Carl Banks relates in "America's Game"). The Bills took their time understanding what was happening, but once they did, they gave the ball to Thomas on almost every play, and it nearly won them the game.

Quote from: Giant Jim on October 09, 2024, 11:10:34 AMI always felt that other than Scott Norwood, no one stood out from that game. Anderson's running, Hostetler's play and the defense were enough to keep the game close. Anderson was MVP because someone had to get the car or go to Disneyland or whatever to satisfy the sponsors.

Really? Disagree. It was probably the best (or most suspenseful) Super Bowl up to that point. Mark Ingram's crazy first down catch. Hostetler's dramatic heroics. Lots of great defensive play. Anderson's punch to the defender's helmet. The Giants totally outplayed the Bills but the Bills came so close to winning.

Exactly, no one stood out from above all others.
