In my opinion, a wise move by Daboll

I will also add that this sort of move is the type one makes if one is seriously trying to win more games.   I say that, because in my consumption of football media, I have heard speculation that putting DeVito in was an indication the team was actively trying to tank.

It's an indication he's looking for support from the Locker Room and Dex is the leader. Otherwise he loses his job.

To his credit, a reasonable, common-sense action by Daboll who understood the sensitivity involved in having made such a consequential decision.

Cheers!

I'm gonna be on the opposite spectrum on this one with my blue colored glasses. I think Daboll wants to use Devito here to show if given the right QB then he can definitely be a winning coach here.

Time will tell if I'm totally wrong. If Devito is truly awful then I'll come here and own it. My gut tells me we will be pleasantly surprised (disclaimer - I'm not saying Devito is our future QB because I don't think he is)

But if you're right about DeVito (and my gut tells me the opposite) it will make it harder to draft a top QB prospect in 2025.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Agreed.

To clarify, I'm not saying Devito will light anything up. All I'm saying is I anticipate he shows us more than what Jones has - which will benefit Daboll in a variety of ways.

I think Dabol picked TD because he gives them the best chance to win. We all saw Lock. He looked lost. Our QB stable is a mess, no doubt. We are in QB hell. It was time to move on from DJ with that $23 Million cap hit hanging over their heads if he got hurt. And the man runs with no interest in protecting himself. They will need that cap space $ next year. If DJ was playing well, this decision would never have had to be made. But he didn't and he wasn't. So there it is.

Of the reasons given for starting TD over Lock this seems to be the most reasonable.  Beyond questioning why they spent $5 million of cap space they really needed on Lock when they already had TD, this reason doesn't paint NYG management in a bad light.

One of the other suggestions I have heard is that Lock is really bad, and if they started Lock, it would show that Schoen and Daboll wasted $5 million on a QB who can't even be a decent backup QB for them.

It seems to me they signed Lock in the event that Jones was playing well, the team was winning games, and then Jones got hurt.  Or if he couldn't be ready to play Week 1 coming off the ACL.  Once the season was over, it makes all the sense in the world to evaluate Devito to see if he can stick around as QB2 next year or not.  Lock will be gone either way.

I completely agree

The season is lost, period

They basically know what they have with Lock, but DeVito is another story. Lock is here for 1 year, as of now, can DV be the backup and save the team extra money? That is why DV is starting over Lock.
I also concur, that starting DeVito over Lock makes all the sense in the world.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Yes, 100%. It's almost expected in the pro ranks, and part of what differentiates NFL from college. Bob
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!
