Quote from: killarich on November 22, 2024, 11:46:33 AMCould a team possibly take the chance ? Then cut him in the offseason and be cleared the rest of his contract with the smaller similar how it would for us ?

It's possible.  It's worth noting that if a team claims him on waivers, they are paying him just under $2 million per week for the rest of the season.  Any pro-rated costs stay with the Giants.  So from my understanding of the salary cap, the team could release him at the end of the season with no additional costs

Its pretty late in the season to add a QB to a roster.  I could definitely see a playoff bound team with high aspirations adding him after he clears waivers.  There are some of those teams that may seem him as an upgrade as backup...

And of course there is always the variable of injuries

I assume the dead cap for next year would stay with the Giants since it's basically just his pro-rated signing bonus?

So I think it's possible a team on the edge takes the risk .... If the hit is only for this season

Wait so what happens with the injury clause ?

Some reports made it seem the benching was more about the injury clause devs football productivity ?

If so doesn't mean the team takes on that risk also ? Or is that now waived ?

On the edge of what?

A qb upgrade away from making the playoffs possibly?

I'm not saying myself Jones is an upgrade to anyone ....but I do think it's possible a team looks at him as an upgrade .... Or not idk

End of an era. Now watch him sign with someone like SF or KC and go on to win a ring

If a team picks him up on waivers, I believe they assume his contract so the injury clause stands.

This is a bit of an unusual situation as veterans are usually released rather than waived.  However, NFL rules say if you release a veteran after a certain date (I believe the after the trade deadline) they are subject to waivers

He would hardly be the first Giant to do that in recent history

I would think if a team picks him up on waivers, they pick up his contract. If he clears waivers, the Giants keep the contract and if he doesn't pass a physical next spring, it ain't gonna be good for the Giants.

Since Jones asked for the release, my assumption is that the injury clause would no longer be the Giants' responsibility.

If he clears waivers bd gets injured on another team and we have to pay I will be pissed

Should have just let him start the rest of the season

This makes no sense if releasing him isn't somehow an out of the injury clause

I disagree. Just because he asked to be released doesn't mean the Giants had to grant it. I'm sure the NFLPA will enforce payment. Then again, the NFLPA is a bit of a joke.

I find it hard to believe any team on the brink of a playoff spot would see a quarterback, who's led one of the league's worst offenses in 4 out of his 5 seasons, as an upgrade. Once he clears waivers, I expect he'll be signed as a backup by teams like Miami or Jacksonville
