I would think the way the injury guarantee is written, the injury that causes him to fail his spring physical would have had to occur during a game or activity (working out/practice) sanctioned by the NY Giants.  Otherwise, the team could have been on the hook if DJ had broken his leg while vacationing in, say, Cabo after the season was over.

I really don't see why a team would add DJ as a backup, with his salary baggage, in the middle/toward the end of the season.  My guess is his best chance will be if a playoff contender loses their starter and they need a backup to their current #2. 

I hope the Giants sign nobody at QB and rise the season out with DeVito and Lock.  Let the aircraft carrier sink so we can build a new one.

A fair and reasonable decision by all concerned. I certainly wish him well even if he should prove to be fodder for future second (bitch and moaning) guessing around here.

Personally, I have no idea as to what his future may be but presently, I can only think of him as having been a bust and a Giants Gettlestone misfortune

Usually, a vested vet like DJ has his salary fully guaranteed if they are on the 53-man roster on week one.

Assuming there wasn't an agreement by DJ, I believe he gets his full salary for the rest of the year (subject to offsets if a team claims him on waivers or signed him after waivers)

That being the case, I wonder if DJ even signs with another team.  Would he be better off resting and healing the rest of the season rather than sitting on the bench of another team as a backup (it seems a starter is a long shot between what he put on tape and the time it takes to learn an offense)?   Plus, if he clears waivers and gets hurt while playing or practicing under the veteran minimum, it hurts him next season.

If its after he clears waivers, it can be a vet minimum contract.  I don't think anyone is going to claim him and pay that salary, even if there is need.  There is 7 weeks left in the season, not a lot of time to get him up to speed and ready to play especially for $2 million/week.

That's all fine and good, but can he play? That's more important.

I agree about the part about outside NFL activities, not so sure about if he's on another team. Hopefully we'll find out.

Guarantee this is not the case or the Giants would never release him like this because they could just put him on ice to ensure no injury. Pretty sure "release" means terminating his contract, so there's no injury clause in effect anymore.

I would agree with this take. Signing on as a backup with a team that envisions bringing him back in 2025 is the best move. Gives him time to learn the playbook and get comfortable with the organization. Ideally it should be a team whose coach and OC are very likely to be there next year.
