NGT- OC Ben Johnson informs teams he is withdrawing from consideration

For most coaches, there is some aspirations of being the top dog. As a young coordinator, it's great to be noticed, appreciated for their success and accomplishments, and wanted. I imagine that the Lions as a whole knew they were underdogs going up against a heavy favorite, playing with house money. Maybe they didn't think they really had a shot at winning and Johnson was looking at future opportunities.

But after seeing how close they got, perhaps he has more confidence that they can truly hang with the big dogs and be back in the playoffs next year. It's OK to change his mind. It's not a bad look, to me.

Hiring a head coach is a bit of a race among teams, as you can't get a jump on the competition for the best coordinators and position coaches until you have the HC in place.   So while, I understand and agree that it likely wasn't his intention to harm his suiters, the reality is he sort of did.

Commanders officials were en route to Detroit for a meeting with Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn when they got word that Johnson was staying with the Lions, per sources. While the abrupt pivot by Johnson was considered "surprising" by several league sources, he was not considered a lock for the Commanders' job, despite his strong reputation as a coordinator and a loyal coach. The Commanders leadership team remains eager to meet with the respected Glenn, who is one of several candidates the team is expected to consider for its head-coach vacancy.

thinking...hmm. Maybe there might be an opening next year..with the Giants?
