Capologists--Please explain the Carter Coughlin situation

I thought I knew a little bit about the cap situation  but can someone help

 the Giants cut Carter Coughlin


added him to PS

today added him to the 53

What did this accomplish?/

As I understand it, Coughlin is a practice squad elevation rather than a member of the 53. This may seem like a minor distinction, but it means that if the team elects to move on from Coughlin during the season, they are not on the hook for his whole year's salaries.  Vested vets on the 53-man roster have their salaries guaranteed for the year.   The Giants have taken the unusual step of carrying a 51-man roster (with 2 PS elevations) for week one to minimize the salary guarantees of marginal veterans like Coughlin.

Giants have elevated LBs Carter Coughlin and Ty Summers from the practice squad, they'll be core special teamers.

Both Coughlin and Summers are vested vets.

LB Curtis Bolton, another vested vet, was released.

They'll go into the season with 51 on the 53, plus the elevations, which means five inactives tomorrow.

Tommy DeVito will likely be designated as emergency QB. He does not count against the 48, so counts as an inactive.

Another sign of health (and roster/cap management), choosing to thread the needle.

On all the roster maneuvering: It was a mistake to have vets like Sterling Shepard and Bobby McCain in the final roster spots to start last season. Once they were on the Week 1 roster, there was no financial benefit to cutting them, so they lasted most/all season even though they barely played.

Think it's smarter to have those last few roster spots filled by young players so there's more flexibility. Or you could just keep those spots empty, as the Giants only have 51 players on their 53-man roster for the opener

Dan,

All those injuries in the Jets PS game cost the team a few million of cap money (in injury settlements and IR) that the team hadn't anticipated.
