In my opinion, yesterday's game hinged on one play

Had DJ not been roughed (and a roughing the passer penalty called) the Giants turn the ball over at their own 24 yard line and they likely go down 14 (10 at the least) and I suspect the game plays out very differently.

Well, sometimes they say it's better to be lucky than good.

Also, as @Ed Vette mentioned, the Giants got too conservative in the second half (both sides of the ball) and that also nearly cost them the game.

Still, I am very happy to be 1-2, it's sure as hell better than 0-3

I said the same thing yesterday in Ed's thread
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Rich: Great minds think alike.

Reminds me of a line from the Broadway show "Pippin" (many years ago).

If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

It absolutely did.  I'll fully admit that after the opening kick fumble and TD and the following play, I thought "here we go again".  I nearly turned the tv off after the Jones interception.  My kids and wife wanted to go shopping and staring down the barrel of a 14-0 start I nearly gave in.

Lee: So even if that play didn't change the game's outcome, it did change the outcome of your afternoon. Bob

I agree, Rich; however, the luck seems to even out over the year.  If the Giants' didn't lose Gano last week, I think they win that game.  So, we lost a game we should of won, and won a game we should have lost.  That's why I don't like playing the ifs and but game...it usually evens out.

Please help me--I am not quite sure why you feel we should have lost yesterday

I have reached a point in my life where I no longer believe that predicting things that will happen in football has any sort of legitimacy.  That's why I favor analysis and broad-stroke projections (with full appreciation of limitations).

Just this season:

1)  who would have predicted the Pats beating the Bengals?

2)  Who would have predicted Sam Darnold?

3) Who predicted that the 49ers would start off 1-2?

4)  Who would have predicted Malik Willis putting up a 120.9 QB rating against the Titans?

king: I agree 100% with luck evening out, but don't think yesterday was a game Giants deserved to lose.

I do think the Commanders game was a game Giants should have won.

However, I also believe things even out from season to season, and during the past three-to-five seasons Giants have "escaped" against Commanders a few times, winning games they IMO definitely deserved to lose.

I watch the Red Zone all day. I've noticed that many teams with leads get conservative. Perhaps they just don't want to make costly mistakes.

I think the Giants were handicapped by poor field position in the second half. I believe they had at least two starts from the ten yard line in. (Clarification would be appreciated).

You know, slice or dice it any way you want, but the simple fact was that the team was in a "must win" situation and, when they made the plays, they made them and the other team did not. Towards the end, it seemed like neither team made any big plays at all and the Browns' last gasp was dropped after the ball hit the receiver between the one and the nine and, like that, it was game over, Giants win.

Now, with the Cowboys' loss against the Ravens, Thursday Night's matchup takes on a very different situation than what many of us were expecting. This now becomes a critical game for second place in the division (NOTE: pending the outcome of tonight's football game) but, also, will tell us something we have pondered since the offseason:

Strategic Imperative #2: "CLOSE THE GAP" between the Giants and their "KEY" divisional rivals (i.e. DALLAS, Philadelphia).

In addition, several of us here have taken note that 09/26/2024 is circled for the 0-40 / 17-49 retribution. I'm not sure if they're capable of dialing up the "R" word, but I want to see objective evidence the gap has been closed.

Yesterday was the necessary shot in the arm they needed and I'm ecstatic they made it onto the winners' list this week. One step at a time.

Peace!

Dan,

As Rich pointed out, we were fortunate to have an easy int, which would have resulted in points, called back; IMO, the contact to the head should not have been called. We were fortunate to get that call.  Clev also dropped a 4th down pass that would have put them at midfield.  We had a terrible second half, and did our best to give the game away.

President Rick

we played the 2nd half not to lose....so did the ravens.  both we and they were lucky.  Sitting on a lead is NIOT wise.  The guys on the other team are professionals.  You cannot give an inch.

Glad we won.  Go Giants.

To be fair, the Giants did try to put the game away in the third qtr with big plays and we sh!t the bed.  The plays were there...they got conservative in 4th qtr when it was apparent the offense was sputtering.  I actually agree with the coaching direction.
