I can't fault a coach who calls a play on third down that resulted in two receivers wide open well past the first down marker.

I won't and don't fault the coach. Poor execution by the QB. Everyone else did their job except him.

3nd and short is not the time for a trick or complex play, especially with an offense that constantly under preforms. Too much can go wrong. I would've been OK with the play call on 2nd down. 3rd and 2 needs to convert, 2nd and 2, take a chance at a low percentage play.
