How long before the Giants turn things around and become a playoff contender?

Quote from: Stringer Bell on December 02, 2024, 05:49:50 PMI just don't see how adding a new QB to the mix - especially if they're a rookie from this weaker class - will make us competitive next year.

The OL is still a mess. At a minimum, we still need 2 starters and a swing OT. We need another WR to complement Nabers, as Slayton will be gone and neither Wan'dale nor Hyatt have taken the next step. We need a #2 RB to pair with Tracy to keep from overusing him. And we need a second TE, as I'm still not sold on Theo and we have no one behind him.

On defense, we need a DE, a backup DT, a third pass rusher to replace Ojulari, a starting CB and a depth CB. Plus a new kicker.

If we were to sign / trade for a bridge QB (Darnold-esque) and Schoen was able to have 2 more strong drafts, then we have a chance to compete in 2026. Ok not confident of it being that I'm not sold on Daboll, but a competent QB and continued infusion of young talent will better position us.

If we draft a QB this year, I don't see us competing until 2027, at earliest - and maybe not until yet another QB comes in depending on who we draft.

First of all, I LOVE your handle. I just finished watching The Wire a few months ago after years of wanting to.

Anyway, I understand your points but I just don't see all the doom and gloom as you and some others do.
Yes, we definitely need another WR to go with Nabors, but a decent one can be had in the lower rounds of the draft or thru FA. We don't need a #1, just a compliment.
I think we can be set at RB with Tracy and Singletary. The OL was OK until injuries, so we definitely need some back-up there. I would still like to see Neal moved to Guard and see what he can do there. I also think Theo is a keeper and can be very productive if we ever get an offense or QB that uses the TE  as many other teams do. Once we get that QB, who can make the necessary throws and can move the defense off the LOS, I think we can have a productive offense.
On defense, yes we could use a decent body on the defensive line. What I would love to see is Thibs developing another move to be a very productive player. As of now, he is a one-trick pony but if he ever gets another move, he can be special. I also would love to see Simmons get a bigger role on the defense. No one seems to know what to do with him. I fully agree our biggest weakness is DB. I don't know what to make of Banks, is he a keeper or a pretend keeper? he definitely has regressed this year. We do need help here and until we get that fixed we just won't be a playoff-ready team, but if we  do, we CAN be a contender for a playoff spot and a competitive team week in and week out.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

I say a rolling 4 years, rolling until I see some sign of eptness breaking the hold ineptness has had on them for more than a decade.  Thank goodness for my futból team.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Not slowing my roll

Impossible to answer this now. We don't know who the QB will be next season. With the right guy plus another off season like last year and they can compete as soon as next season. If they take the wrong QB and refuse to get rid of him even when it's clear he can't do the job... Like they did last time...It'll be 6 years minimum.

Yes, we can see it as a silly question not worth an if and buts were candy and nuts treatment, but that would likely say as much or more about our temperament than our judgement. Still, we Giants fans have no good reason to do more than hope for better luck and better days when faced with the coincidence that this season's current 2 Wins in 12 games is a match for the team's 2 winning season in its last 12.

Ah, but they were more successful in making the Playoffs in the previous baker's dozen 2000-2012. They made the POs in 7 of those 13 years, won 2 of 3 Super Bowl games and had an overall 116-92 W-L record; credit due to Ernie Accorsi, Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and, of course, Eli not to mention the talent added without any help from George Young except that he's the guy who handed his position over to Ernie in 1998.

Seriously, George Young was indeed a difference-maker, the guy who Drafted Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, and Joe Morris, who named Bill Parcells the Giants HC and set them on their way to 8 Playoff appearances, 2 Super Bowl victories and a 155-139-2 record overall with teams that had just 1 winning season in its last 11.

However, much of Young's success began to wane, to become inconsistent and often disappointing, during the second half as his nearly two decades as Giants football boss. It seems to have coincided with the introduction of Free Agency and the Salary Cap in the early 90s something with which he never seemed comfortable. He is deemed to have signed several players to overvalued contracts while losing core talent to other teams.

And then there is the remarkable fact that in six straight drafts from '91 to'96 each of his 1st Round picks proved to have been a bust. Fortunately, many of the guys taken in later rounds during that same time proved to be elite players e.g., Hamilton, Strahan, Sparks, Sehorn, Toomer, and Barber.

So, is there a point to be taken from all that? I would say yes that even if you think you know what needs to be done you can never be sure if and when it will be done successfully as chance is always ready to play a role, good or bad. All we can do is hope for the best i.e., a better future.

Cheers!

To make the play-offs or be in a position to make the play-offs late in the season?  That can happen next year.  See: 2021, 2015.  To be a serious contender where the play-offs are expected and getting there isnt seen as a surprise?  A team that people are thinking could win it all?  When they get an actual NFL starting calibre QB, I would have to look at the rest of the roster.
