Quote from: GloryDays on November 27, 2024, 05:35:27 PMI am curious, Dion himself is a minister and conservative, NO? Why is he hated by conservative fans?!!

Too outspoken. Too flashy. Too confident. Remember, the Giants have still not had a starting black QB, especially not one coming in as a young star. Something to consider. It's the elephant in the room. And it's not entirely an accident.

It is what it is.

I know it's an awkward subject. But it's going to come up soon.

Not many people want to acknowledge it. Ed asked a week or so ago and most tip-toed around it.

I knew exactly what he was asking and I gave an honest answer. I think everyone knows. But not everyone will confront the issue, or talk about it honestly.

Doesn't matter, it will come up soon enough.

Indeed they are.

They were also one of the first to have a black MLB, Harry Carson. (Only Willie Lainier preceded him).

Black QB is a different kettle of fish, though. Everybody knows that. Including Deion, by the way, and its not an accident that he made sure from the beginning that his son played QB.

Summed up in one word:

Flamboyant - the antithesis of the Mara philosophy.

Said Wellington, in 1996 after his team defeated the "flamboyant" Cowboys in Giants Stadium, with a direct reference to Jerry Jones, "It's good to see arrogance humbled!"

That is what Schoen will have to overcome to sell Deion's kid to John.

For the record, Deion is an outstanding businessman who managed his stage alter-ego to generate controversy, interest and excitement wherever he went. Coupled with his off the chart talent of being a multi-sport professional, it led to demand of his skillset and tolerance of his brand; that is, until he helped his team win championships and his mouth and attitude took over complacent teams who exhaled after winning; or left for more money elsewhere.

Deion could do that as a CB and be the final link to a Super Bowl defense as well as play special teams or on the offense. His son, however, is a QB investment and can't jump teams the way his dad did and be successful. So, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out and what came of this Colorado visit for the Giants.

As for folks hating on Deion, from a standpoint of being a Cowboy and 49er, understood. As for his flamboyant personality, it's all an act. Get to know the man, and you'll find a smart businessman, caring and loving family man, a generous philanthropist, a person with a ridiculous drive to work hard, accomplish whatever he puts his mind to and succeed and is a winner. That he has fun in public rubs some people the wrong way. Again, most of that is show for the business end, while the rest is who cares, he deserves to have enjoyment from his accomplishments.

That he is coaching up his son is a good thing if the kid becomes even half of what Deion accomplished.

If Schoen and company, as well as Deion, see him as a good fit for New York, and the Giants can get him, I think John Mara is going to have no other choice but to welcome the Sanders family to New York and try to build something unprecedented in team annals.

Now THAT would be quite the story to kick off the second century of Giants Football and put the term "Wilderness Years" to bed, once and for all!

But he'll still need a new Left Tackle!

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

If your use of the word " Conservative" was politically slanted, it would not be factually correct, imo.

Ehh... I am personally not convinced of what I think some are getting at. I think if the reason the Giants have not had a black starting QB to this point were due to institutional racism or prejudice going up to the top of the organization, as some appear to be tacitly implying, you would have seen more evidence of that racism/prejudice. Would you not agree that an organization that is patently unwilling to have a black man be its starting QB seems unlikely to be an organization that would have a black man run its entire front office for a good decade? Not to mention numerous senior coaches, backup QBs, perhaps its single most beloved employee (Barnes) who has been with the team for longer than anyone and continues to be there despite poor end results for his department, its current assistant GM, and its greatest player of all time, and on and on.

I do appreciate that it's noticeable that the Giants have not yet had a black starting QB. But I am personally, at this stage at least, not persuaded that it's for any reason other than happenstance.

In this I agree

On the above posts - I don't think Mara would be opposed to a black QB given he had a black GM (even if his brother made himself shadow GM afterward). I think he'd be specifically opposed to Sanders for the reasons outlined above and would opt for a different QB if one was available.
