Maybe the Giants shouldn't draft a QB in the 1st round

Or if there is a QB you don't love they shouldn't draft him?

Peyton Manning was drafted to an awful team and they added pieces over time.

I am saying there seems to be no day one starter. If the Giants LOVE a QB and is there when they pick, then by all means get there guy.

But for me, I would trade back or wait until the 2nd round and get a player like Aller, Beck, Dart, etc and let them sit for a year. Get a vet like Jameis Winston to be our starter in 2025

Even if they draft a guy with the overall #1 they should grab a vet and not force the rookie to start right away if he is not ready.

I think that vet should be a person who would be a good mentor and his ability on the field would very much be secondary.  Not sure which guys for that bill the best.

Quote from: T200 on Today at 07:43:28 AMI think my perspective on who is responsible for DJ's contract has been well-documented.  :ok:

But in case you missed it, Schoen DECLINED the 5th-year option for Jones. They knew from Day 1 they didn't want him. You know who did? Mr. "We Did All We Could To Ruin This Kid" did.
Schoen stated he didn't give Jones the 5th year option because they wanted to  see firsthand what Jones was all about.  Based on that statement, i would disagree they didn't want him. They just didn't know yet.

Game tapes are one thing but working directly with a player is another level

You have a good point.

I'd think they would have known what the cap situation was at the time and it should have been a no-brainer to pick up the option on a QB knowing that his price would only go up.

Personally I don't think they expected to see him lead the team to the playoffs, let alone win a playoff game, thus making it harder to dump him. I think it leads credence to my point that they didn't want him.

Think about it: if they had a losing season, they would have let Jones walk without owing him anything and they would have drafted their own guy. Picking up the 5th-year option meant they pay him an extra year when they didn't need to.

Yes, it would be better to see a player live but game tape is how teams game plan for a player. They glean more than enough information to see a player's tendencies, what they do well and not so well. There was enough tape on Jones for them to say whether they wanted him or not.
