It wasn't even the first deal of its kind. The Braves were paying Bruce Sutter over $1M per year from 1990 until 2022. Ken Griffey Jr. was the Reds' 5th highest paid player LAST YEAR. These deferred contracts are everywhere. The Mets having to pay a little over $1M per year on a 9 figure payroll is barely anything.
