It's sort of funny, one of my knocks on Gettleman was his team-building vision seemed antiquated-  "run the football, stop the football, and get to the opposing QB"

It seems what was old is new.
SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

It's a natural evolution.  Offenses went pass-happy as rules for defending the pass changed.  Defenses focused on stopping the pass.  Logic says if the opponent can shut down a passing game, let's try to run it down their throats.  More teams build a proficient rushing attack, defenses will adjust, offense will react and so forth.

I think a lot of defenses have gotten smaller and quicker to try and stop the passing games, which opens things up for teams with good run blockers to be very effective.

Excellent thread. I read here many suggested in past this would happen.

Personally, I'd like to see the old fullback lead the RB and double as a blocker in passing downs. So many WR and TE don't get open anyway.
