Quote from: ralphpal1 on January 13, 2025, 12:31:54 PMHe might not have great talent now
But he had
Big Ben.
A Brown and others
And
L bell
And a Top offensive line
Top WR
Top RB
Hall of fame QB
For a few years
And he did nothing with them

I completely concur; the notion that Tomlin is coaching some average talent team to success is objectively false.

When Pitt had top-tier talent, they were competing for Super Bowls. With above-average but not elite talent, they've managed just an above-average record over the past four years and haven't been genuine Super Bowl contenders. Tomlin is subject to the same fundamental truth as other coaches: you need talent to win consistently and a top-tier quarterback to truly compete for championships. Just ask Bill Belichick.

Err, Tom Coughlin anyone?
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Is it the same?  If you believe coaching is equally responsible for the W/L record, independent of the teams' aggregate talent, than you should support TCs firing. After all, he had three consecutive abysmal seasons.  Ironically, he had the same three year record when he was fired by Jac.

Quote from: katkavage on January 12, 2025, 05:28:21 PMThey have the pitchforks and torches out for him after another playoff loss. But seriously, they weren't close to Baltimore in talent. They haven't had a real quality QB since Big Ben retired. That they make the playoffs year after year with limited talent on offense is pretty amazing.
Yeah, I don't understand why so many Steelers fans want Tomlin out while they continue to be a winning team despite a lack of offensive weapons and bad-to-mediocre QB play.

100%. Dumbest move this franchise ever made. When you have a coach who has proven he can flat out coach and you start losing it isn't because he forgot how to coach it's because your front office hasn't drafted well. Firing a good coach only makes things worse. As a Giant fan I can only hope the Steelers make the same fatal mistake and we can capitalize off of it.

As Len (@lenng) pointed out, early in Coughlin's career, he was called on the carpet by John Mara to explain why he should keep his job despite two consecutive seasons of making the playoffs (but losing in the first game).   Mara gave Coughlin another chance and the rest, they say, is history.

How John Mara's standards have fallen.  From wanting to know why a HC should keep their job after back-to-back playoff years, to letting guys with back-to-back double-digit loss seasons keep their jobs.

2006 started 6-2
finished season 2-6 down the stretch, going 8-8 overall
But yes made the playoffs

Christmas Eve game vs the Saints at home and the crowd was chanting fire coughlin

Tomlin has little to no coaching tree

What does that mean to you about Tomlin?

In 2006, Chris and Tim weren't part of the decision making process.

He hasn't had many coordinators?  And on offense the ones he's had get put in other coaches trees?

The whole coaching tree thing always confuses me.

Been told Vrabel is not on BBs tree because he hasn't coached under him.

Also told BBs tree isn't successful with names like Weis and Crennel listed.

Been told Parcells tree is successful with names like Weis and Crennel left off the list.
