Quote from: MightyGiants on January 27, 2025, 03:44:44 PMEvery reporter and insider.  While there has been plenty of criticism of Mara, not a single insider or reporter has ever suggested that John Mara has forced a decision on his GM or HC.  In fact, the opposite is what is reported, that Mara lets his people make their own decisions.
Reporters and insiders don't know everything, Rich. I certainly don't either.

I have stated many times, based on what I have heard from Mara and some of Schoen and Daboll's decisions regarding Jones, it led me to believe what I stated.

I fully accept that you don't agree and view it differently. It's OK to have different viewpoints.  :ok:

Quote from: T200 on January 27, 2025, 03:40:21 PMOne of the best things about this site is the varied and legitimate points of view presented. Very few can be outright dismissed and many of us make well-reasoned and valid arguments. This one is right up there.

When it comes to the draft, I rely primarily on what I read from you knowledgeable folks. I also understand that even with all the valuable information presented here, the decision-makers do not consult this site (that I know of  ;)  ).

It will come down to how well they do their due diligence and make the picks with the least amount of perceivable risk.

I appreciate it much and I don't think anyone at this point has enough confidence to put "money down," if you will, in how this will all play out. For us Giants fans, who know they go to the table with nice card in their hand, it all comes down to how the team "interprets" their path forward in terms of value, risk and then (hopefully) needs and wants.

The discussions have been top notch and I won't lie in that my entire perspective on the draft, and certain players, as well as their "expected values," have either slightly modified, or have changed altogether. I am grateful to everyone for sharing their insights to allow that to happen.

I'll get out of the "philosophical" mode and get right to the subject. Personally, I like Deion Sanders as a person, respect the heck out of him as a player, father and philanthropist. He wants to do good on his kids which is why he is very active in their lives. The man completed an MBA a few years ago, yet had part of his foot amputated, and has continued his journey in stride; I admire that now being in my mid 50s and having physical limitations from ankle, Achilles and knee replacement surgeries on the same leg.

Does the man live vicariously through his kids? There's no doubt a part of him does and, as a dad who coaches his daughter's soccer club, I can tell. But is his son right for the New York Football Giants? Is there REALLY anything to fear about Deion "intruding" and causing a stir? Here's what I think. If the Giants do end up drafting his son, I see a golden PR opportunity for Neon and "I believe in EEEEEEEEEE-li" to create their own media buzz that would surprise, and potentially entertain, a decent portion of the fan base. Of course, who knows how long that would last if the boos start showering from above? That's where having a "Godfather" in Eli Manning would make the most sense if ever Sanders has a chance to build a positive rapport with the fanbase other than to "just win."

But, for Schoen and Daboll to make that selection, they are still going to face the question I've posed all along, and it's not going to go away until it is solved, and that is "What do they plan to do with their overpaid, salvage-title Left Tackle?" The question is crude, as it is cruel, but now you have a business AND performance situation to consider. Andrew Thomas has missed 18 of the last 34 Giants games, and over 25% of his entire career, while receiving his payday in 2023. When healthy, a great player and in the discussion as one of the best LT in the league, no question. He's got his work cut out for him with returning from the Lisfranc surgery in October. Of interest, the rookie TE Johnson also suffered a Lisfranc to prematurely end his season as well. That is a concern for me. Is the answer REALLY a third or fourth round pick to replace a former first round, fourth pick of the 2020 draft? Or, pick up a run of the mill FA LT? That's one of the reasons I've thrown in the thought of looking for a trade partner to move down between picks 5-10 and consider one of the top tackles in the draft (NOTE: I still like Kelvin Banks Jr. out of Texas).

We'll see where it goes, but I look forward to seeing more of these articles with players being associated as picks of interest for the Giants.

Thank YOU for your continued input as well!

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

We can only hope Sanders is gone by the time our pick rolls around. But we all know we're not that lucky.

A team that's ahead of us that is ostensibly QB-needy but isn't as high on Sanders as the Giants are acting could easily bait us into moving up. That wouldn't surprise me if it happened. We all watched Schoen try to do exactly that with the Pats. You can only imagine what he'll be willing to do in the midst of his own existential crisis.

Quote from: T200 on January 27, 2025, 01:56:07 PMI know many don't want Sanders for various valid and legit reasons.

Me? My only requirement for them picking a QB, whoever it ends up being, is that they do their homework and they believe in him. If it's Sanders, so be it. They will have their guy and there will be no more defense from me. If they stink it up again, they need to go: Schoen and Daboll.

Dont you think that they  DID THEIR HOMEWORK AND BELIEVED IN Neal and Thibodaux and Jones and ........?
I personally have lost confidence in their ability, collectively, to assess and evaluate talent correctly.
I dont care who has been calling the shots but the stench rising from their incompetence, leading to ascending draft picks, in nauseating.

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 27, 2025, 02:25:31 PMTim,

The issue I have is in Mara's choice of words, which included "quarterback of the future."   Had Mara simply said, "We need to find a starting quarterback," that would set up the idea of a bridge QB and taking a flyer on a day two pick and keeping an eye toward the 2026 draft, as well.   QB of the future puts pressure on drafting a QB at three, even if he is a reach or a gamble.
"future" is a relative term.  He could mean the next year, the next two years, or yes the next 10 years.

Neal and Thibs are on their watch. Jones isn't. Jones is on Mara.

You do make a valid point. But there's free agency and a draft coming up... the season will go on and they will still  have to do their jobs. No GM gets all of their picks right. Hopefully they can hit on more than not and the rebuild can continue moving forward.

I have seen a lot of news about the Giants spending tons of time with Sanders, what have you heard in terms of Dart?
They had a ton of guys there in season to see him but I don't know about at the Senior Bowl.

Do not want.

We heard the same things last year about them spending time with McCarthy, who they didn't take (and I did want). Hopefully that's all this is.
