This is where the talk of "depth" in this draft can be tested out. Even short two of their original picks, they still have an opportunity to add talent to the offensive line, even if it is for depth, it is no less important to address. Same on the defensive line.

That third round pick has the potential to address need and/or value. The ultimate goal for Schoen is to make the Giants better with that pick and I'm willing to back off my offensive line soapbox if a talented player, too good to pass up, is waiting to become the next New York Giants playmaker.

No reason to lower expectations if the draft is as deep in talent as has been discussed before.

Peace!

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 25, 2025, 04:00:39 PMWas this off-season a plan or just a reaction to mandates?  John Mara, the owner, said he was tired of watching the defense allow other teams to march up and down the field and that the number one priority was to get a young QB for the future.  All the moves to this point seem to be addressing those mandates
The only thing I give Mara credit for is not giving into the fan base. I truly believe Joe had a plan all along. It wasn't going to magically materialize after a year or two given the dire situation that he inherited. The rebuild was severely delayed and hampered because of Mara's involvement.

Some people refuse to let go of the past and look towards the future. Sure Schoen had some flubs, he was learning a new job on the fly and it takes time and mistakes. But good people learn from their mistakes.
Schoen hit a home run last year, and after day one of this year's draft, he is still swinging.

What bothers me the most, especially to those that just won't recognize his successes, is that if the Eagle's GM had made the same moves that Schoen has made, this off season and now in the draft, we'd be moaning how a really great GM can do this things.
Schoen is learning and he seems to have mastered many phases of the job. I am certainly looking towards the future with excitement. If those that want to keep bringing up the past, let them live there. We need to look towards the future and stand behind our GM.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Quote from: londonblue on April 25, 2025, 03:16:56 PMI saw RGIII saying the Giants have no idea what they are doing after the Dart pick and I realised that whilst I did not like trading up I still did not agree with him at all. It does feel like the GM is trying to do what needs to be done to create a Giants team we can all recognise. A punishing pass rush, big play passing potential and a running game as our backbone. If I am right expect more LoS help and another RB to be added with different attributes to Tracy.

I didn't find RGIII's comments convincing. He seems to think Schoen and Daboll will be fired at the end of the season. Otherwise drafting Dart makes sense because they have time to develop him.

I have heard Schoen described as a see problem, try to fix problem type GM.  Nothing I have witnessed to date suggests that isn't how he works.

People are trying to credit Schoen with building a fierce pass-rush unit.  Yet, if the Jags had taken Carter, he would have taken Hunter, so the drafting of Carter (the clear consensus one of two blue chip players) was pretty much a no-brainer, not an indication of some sort of master plan.

The Giants were the 3rd biggest spenders in free agency.  Hard not to look like a good GM when you are spending money like a drunken sailor.  People were singing Reese's praises during the 2016 season after a similar spending spree.

As I said, Mara told Schoen he wanted a better defense and a young QB to hopefully be the new franchise QB.  That is exactly what Schoen has done, no deviation from that play, such as fixing an offensive line that has been bad for well over a decade.

Even signing Wilson, the QB-needy Steelers let him walk.  The QB-needy Broncos let him walk while still paying him.  So, the idea that he will be a slam-dunk, solid QB for the team seems a bit unrealistic.

While it feels good to add new and exciting players through the draft and free agent spending sprees feel good this time of year, it's way too early to be putting Joe Schoen into Canton.

All that said, I do hope all the moves the team made work out.  I support Schoen and Daboll because they support the team I root for.  I also appreciate that Schoen and Daboll could have learned from their previous failings.   This is the time of year for optimism (every team is undefeated).  I will enjoy (even if people like Tim, Ed, and Len always hammering me for not being praiseful enough of Joe Schoen makes it harder) the happy optimism time.   As for deciding whether Joe Schoen has turned things around and become a quality GM, that issue needs to be revisited towards the end of the season when we have actual results.

I agree=. There were too many holes to fill and you cannot fill all of them. I hope they filled the secondary in free agency and they have defensively . We could get a running back on day 4 , Simpson or Skattabo but we will not really address the OL until probably next year in FA . As a stop gap this year I would look at Brandon Scherff who still can play and would add veteran leadership. The elephant in the room , ( not his size ) could be Neal switching to guard.
