Tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family (which includes belladonna, a poison).

That's why they thought tomatoes were thought to be poisonous.

Also, some doctors highly recommend against eating the skin of tomatoes because it irritates some people's stomach lining and is to be avoided if you have certain other digestive and other conditions (fairly rare). When we make sauce (also known as gravy; it's sauce where I came from) from scratch, we get peeled ones in a can. I don't know if the tomatoes in tomato paste are pre-peeled or not. Same for store-bought pre-made tomato sauce (buying this is considered heresy among Italians where I come from.
