I have 3 serious questions:

1. If a coach has a few bad yrs  Does the GM ask him to take a pay cut?

2. If a GM has few bad drafts, does he take a pay cut?

3.  When a coach or GM gets fired, why are the remainder of their deals paid?
🤔
Ps. If any fmr execs wanna answer. 🗣Go

All good and fair questions. I guess the only devil's advocate, semi-response would that they're not making $40mm a year like Jones is.

The principle is the same though, obviously. And I've already stated which camp I am in on this subject. I think it was a very silly suggestion by Lombardi.

I think Mike Lombardi looks worse because he didn't do his homework.  DJ's $35 million base salary is guaranteed, so if the Giants cut him, DJ could make even more money (since he likely would sign with another team) than if he played for the Giants this year and then released him.

I generally take Mike Lombardi at his word in terms of not having an ax to grind with the Giants.  That said, I can't help but think of Art Stapleton's comments (posted on this thread) in terms of why Lombardi is still pushing a faulty claim (which he no doubt knows better)

And their salary doesn't count against the cap so that doesn't prohibit them from signing a free agent.

So like Mighty alludes to they simply cannot cut Jones this year. Can't happen. Next year if they want to they will but it's impossible to do this year.

They can fire a GM or coach tomorrow for whatever reason they want and bring in a new guy. Giants have been doing that every other year for about a decade now.

You would think somebody who claims to be as knowledgeable as Lombardi claims to be would have done his HW about how Jones's contract was structured.  Secondly, you would think he would also understand that the amount of American currency being transferred from the NY Giants Football Club to the checking account of Daniel Jones is not necessarily the same as the amount being applied to the salary cap of the NY Football Giants for the 2024 NFL season.  Thirdly, you would think a former GM (as mentioned whenever anything he says is discussed) would be aware of what actually happens when a player takes a "pay cut" in the NFL and it is generally only done when a players has a higher non-guaranteed salary for that upcoming season than he is worth on the open market, but with very little if any guaranteed money.  In these situations, the team generally has all the leverage.  As they can cut the player, player gets none of that non-guaranteed salary and is now unemployed.  By taking the pay cut, they are still likely getting a little more than they could on the open market.

If Jones plays well this year and the Giants do keep him, this is something they may consider heading into the 2026 season.  At that point, he will be a ~$60MM cap hit.  Something like $11-12MM from his signing bonus and then a $47MM non-guaranteed salary..  At that point, he may agree to re-do the contract to a lower salary from the $47MM.
