The NFLPA database has been updated to reflect Andrew Thomas' restructure. The Giants currently have $13M in cap space. Seems like a decent amount, but it's just 24th most in the league and it will decrease before the opener. Here's how:

Once top 51 accounting ends in Week 1, the 52nd and 53rd players on the roster will count toward the cap. So that's roughly $2M. Then the practice squad is another ~$4M. Plus any players on IR will start counting, although the Giants are fortunate not to have any expensive players on IR. But just using rough estimates, that $13M will be cut in half in a week. The hope would then be to use the remaining cap space to get through the season with P-squad elevations and injury replacement signings.

Rich, can you remember how much they carried through the season last year?

Is the half that will remain in a few weeks likely to be spent or merely carried through the season?

If I recall, last year, they didn't have much surplus to start the season and had to rework a few contracts in-season to create needed space (although they were able to carry over a million or two from last season).

So far, I have seen Schoen mostly keep the cap surplus to a minimum by waiting until needed to rework deals.  I assumed this was so he could cry poverty when speaking to agents.  Creating so much space when it's not really needed is a new move for Schoen.
