Eli Manning eligible for the HoF

Eli will "compete" against 166 other members for the right to wear the Gold Jacket; Initially, I thought it would take him two or three chances to get in to the Hall.  However, he appears to be best of the modern QBs eligible. If the committee selects a single QB, I believe it's Eli:

I won't be shocked if he makes it on the first ballot. It's not my base case, but I won't be shocked if it happens. Two time Super Bowl MVP is an extremely rare thing. The company he shares for that distinction is extremely scarce and impressive. I won't be shocked if he makes it on the first ballot. It's not my base case, but I won't be shocked if it happens. Two time Super Bowl MVP is an extremely rare thing. I agree, but for me it goes beyond the 2 SB MVPs, it is the 2 last minute game winning drives.  Some discount the 2 MVPs because Jim Plunkett has 2 SB wins including an MVP, and didn't get in, but there's really little comparison.  In xv Plunkett had an excellent game but the game was a blow-out, not so much because he was so good but because Jaworski was so bad, with 3 INTs.  His other SB win was also a blowout, but it was because Marcus Allen ran for 191 yards and the opposing QB threw 2 INTs.  In Eli's 2 MVPs he really was the 'indispensible' man, which really wasn't the case with Plunkett.

Much has also been made of the fact that Eli was basically a .500 regular season QB.  But if we look a little deeper, it is really due to a Tale of Two Teams.  Team 1, starting in his first full year as a starter until the year after the 2nd SB he never had a season below .500 and had a record of 77-51.  In Team 2, which is the rest of his career, his record was 39-60, with only one winning season.  But I'd argue that that wasn't an Eli problem, it was a Giants' problem, as he was still putting up pretty decent numbers in the service of a bad, bad team.

So, while I'm an admitted homer, I think there is a very solid case for him getting in on the first try.

McNair will probably make it in.

Other than that, I see no reason why Eli shouldn't be voted, based on his competition on this position.

Unless the voters play the "anti NY bias" game they did with Harry Carson, Eli gets in and that's that. There are some excellent QBs on that list who one could argue were victims of circumstance in the big game (e.g. McNair, Ryan). But, those guys had opportunities to get it done and didn't. Eli, in the same situation, did it twice to a team that goes down as dominant in that era which had the greatest QB of all time, hands down. That QB walked off the field twice with his head down while Eli carried off the Lombardi and the game's MVP twice!

There's nothing else to debate after that. Eli can punch his ticket this season and those other great QBs can come in at a future date.
