Given the value of the position? Unless they are a game-changing talent, it comes down to the schematic fit and what you can get in lieu of paying the safety. Don't get me wrong: I wish the Giants extended him (or Julian Love) before their values skyrocketed. Money allocated to Slayton could've been pushed to Love.

As for not prioritizing paying safeties: look at Landon Collins in Washington. Gibril Wilson did nothing when he left the Giants. Julian Love is playing well but is hardly a game breaking talent. If you want to look beyond the Giants, Jamal Adams is another bust.

Instead, the Giants prioritize obtaining higher value position targets (ala - Brian Burns).

See this is just factually incorrect. Love IS a game breaking talent. He made the Pro Bowl last year and has now been extended beyond that easily affordable contract he took to leave us. Every time we let talent walk out the door we are throwing lesser talented and untested replacements onto the field.

It would be nice to so someone from the secondary make it contract #2.

If I remember correctly, Love rejected the Giants offer thinking he could get more, then the Giants used most of that space to sign Slayton, then Love signed for less with Seattle. Don't really blame the Giants for losing him in that scenario. Different than McKinney, certainly.
