I believe it does answer your question.  Those rules apply in all situations.

If, after learning all the facts, Brady felt that there was a reason to criticize DJ's decision, then he would have been justified to do so, although fairness dictates that it be considered against Brady's own career decisions. Like Brady "went to Kraft to force Belichick to trade" Jimmy Garoppolo.
It was a straightforward question, Rich. Would you have been OK with Brady's criticism of Jones if Brady had interviewed Daboll and/or Schoen first?

I gave you an answer, although admittedly I don't see things quite as simple as you do.   The short answer is yes, with all the qualications I previously stated.

I don't think this Brady/Jones story is much of a story, myself. If you listen to what he said, he admits he doesn't know exactly how things went down, and then he says that asking for a release was MAYBE "not how I would have handled it." I wouldn't exactly call that brutally harsh criticism. He's just giving his own perspective.

As one of the great all time luminaries not just of football but of all of American professional sports, Brady is allowed to give his perspective. Most of these announcers are nothing but rose petals and milk and honey all the time, never daring to do anything other than praise everyone constantly. I don't mind having a couple of guys who are occasionally a bit more on the critical side. I think Brady has earned that right given his own major success in this league. It's not like Mike Lombardi who does nothing but talk about how bad a job everyone else is doing running NFL teams when he himself was an absolute complete failure at it and has been out of the league for ages.

While I appreciate you perspective, Jeff, I don't know if I agree.  I don't think professional success exempt one from ethical behavior.  Since you brought up Lombadi, it's worth noting that Mike speaks from a position of knowledge, not ignorance as Brady likes to do.

Rich,

I agree that one's success does not exempt him or her from unethical behavior (I assume you meant unethical), but I don't think what Brady said was unethical at all. If you want to argue it was perhaps a bit misguided, that is fine, but all he did was say it was "maybe not how I would have handled it", after admitting up front he does not know all the details.

You are perfectly entitled to be offended by what Brady said, and obviously I'm not criticizing you for feeling that way. My personal view is that this just isn't that big of a deal. I know you don't agree, and fair enough.

Jeff,

You are more than entitled to fine with Brady wrongly criticizing Jones, completely ignorant of the facts; you're entitled just as I am entitled to consider it unethical to wrongly smear a man in front of 10s of millions of people while being completely ignorant of the facts (and not considering a disclaimer of said ignorance a get-out-of-jail-free card).  No judgment on your views on my part.

Oh absolutely. I don't want to get political here Rich but I hate what society has become from the top down.

I hear you.

To stay in the football realm, the great John Madden wouldn't be ignorantly bashing a guy who is not even with the team.  I read a book written by Phil Simms some years ago.  He talked about how important it was to him to be respectful and fair to the players and coaches he was covering.  Rudeness and confrontation have replaced knowledge and thoughtfulness.
