A Bust.

Could not read the line of scrimmage blocking.

Good receiver for Houston out of the backfield after his stint in NY, but as a 1st round draft choice not one of George Young's prouder choices.

Fortunately, if memory serves me correct we drafted Joe Morris i same draft or year after and what a joy "Little Joe" was for us.

But Butch Woolfolk as a total dud.

I think you're right about Joe Morris in the 2nd round.  Woolfolk was a Jersey boy so maybe Young thought it would sell tickets.  I think there was a better RB available who went right after Woolfolk but I might be way off.

Parcells benched him in the middle of the '84 season for Joe Morris and that was the point where the Giants became a winning team. He also made a couple of other changes for that game against Washington, one was on the offensive line. I think he benched William Roberts and moved Brad Benson to left tackle.

Surprise fact of the day. Woolfolk made all-rookie along with Marcus Allen.

Why did it take so long for Parcells to start Morris over Woolfolk?

It was highly unusual for anyone to draft a RB at #1 AND at #2, but as much of a bust Wolfolk was, the successful Joe Morris was. Wolfolk was drafted at #18.
That draft was 1982.

Just my memories of Wolfolk are that besides what was mentioned, it was widely reported he had 'no heart' in the way he played his position.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Morris was too short. Woolfolk was the perfect height and weight and great speed. The book said he was the perfect running back. I felt Morris beat him out for the job every pre-season.

What are you guys talking about?

Butch Woolfolk was named the offensive rookie of the year for the 1982 season, making several big plays and establishing a terrific partnership with the teams other running back, Rob Carpenter. He was one of the few bright spots on the terrible 1983 team, including one game where he carried 43 times (an NFL record) for 159 yards. During the 1984 season, Parcells decided Joe Morris was more his kind of guy and made him the starter, in a season in which the Giants offense, with a rejuvenated Phil Simms, went pass-crazy. After the season he was traded to Houston where he performed well for a couple of seasons. Injuries ended his career prematurely.

George Adams, RB out of Kentucky, drafted by George Young in the 1st round in 1985: now THAT was a bust.

I am pretty sure that Marcus Allen won ROY in 1982.

George Adams had a decent rookie season backing up Morris (498 yards off the bench) but suffered a season ending injury right before the start of the 86 season and never really recovered. OJ was acquired to back Morris plus there was Galbreath and Rouson. Adams was buried on the depth chart in 87.

Correction. Woolfolk won NFC offensive rookie of the year for 1982. Not bad.
