It will be what they want it to be.  Us older folks have very little say, as it should be.

You are 100% right.  As older folks, we need to understand it is their world now.  Don't get me wrong.  They've done some amazing things.  NYC is now more of a bicycle friendly city than it has ever been.  I never thought that would happen.  What I want them to understand is that when you know history, you can see developments and understand potentially where they may go.

I feel your frustration.

At 56 years of age, my grandparents, great uncles who served in WWII, parents and even uncles, all of whom served, have now passed.

I watched Neil Armstrong take his first step onto the lunar surface ... in diapers! Today, that same person indulges himself in History Channel and the History Vault more than anything else my idiot box has to offer, except our Giants, my Australian Football Magpies and a few others.

I look at "my" History, which has correlations to "your" History, and there are principles generations have alignment with each other where lessons learned are applicable, to your point, and not a day goes by when I try to put wisdom on my kids using stories "when I was their age."

But there is another side of that coin which completely scares me. It's the world that has been created today which will beget the world of tomorrow that neither my kids will be ready for nor will I be able to fully prepare them for. Do we REALLY raise our children to be postured to go to war? Is that something we really must do? I believe this is where understanding the need to stand up for your country, and learn about the times in the past when we had to do just that.

What do you think I did? My wife and I, both veterans, gave it to our four kids straight up. The two older "men," both over 21, are registered for Selective Service and understand what that means. The soon to be 20 year old lady has given thought to join and the "baby" 11 year old Sherman Tank is a hard-core athlete who would be a perfect fit for Officer Candidate School. There's no sugar-coating in this house!

I hope this gives you even the smallest piece of mind that when the torch is passed, there are still people out there from younger generations who DO care.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

I feel very fortunate that I have lived my life in the time period I have, because I have grave misgivings about the emerging world.  My only solace is a strong suspicion is that is a very common feeling and has been for millennia, as evidenced, in part, by the words of Aristotle:

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint ... As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behaviour and dress."
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Not slowing my roll

There's a related passage in Plato's Republic that discusses the wisdom of age.

Growing up in the 60s-70s, my parents generation likely thought we were all a bunch of hippy jackasses.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."
