It's simply cheaper to draft the "right" guys than to acquire them in any other manner.

When that is accomplished, you have more money to pay each and every one of them (fewer free agents).

You also have more picks for upcoming years (fewer trades means more picks).

If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Plus, I have seen many teams keep their key players on offense with big contracts and make up the savings by building the defense through the draft

Very cool chart.

The eagles one undrafted player, was in a wrong system signed on a flyer and put in a position to dominate and did. They have backups who can start for the three other teams, easily. That chart is gorgeous.

The Cowboys, not gonna lie pretty impressive to have a top ten defense with a few cornerstone players and low cost castoffs that they got to play better. Nice job

The Redskins err i mean commanders, that looks like a house of cards about to fall apart to me. They had lighting in a bottle last year and I think this year they will regress.

The Giants. They have a good core of young players drafted and have added very young players in free agency who can adhere to that core. All of those high dollar free agents are fine to me, because of thier age. Burns contract which everyone complained about is already 33% under the top of the market btw. High upside for sure. Can they stop the run? Can they handle 1-3 starters missing games? Time will tell..

Awesome chart.  Shows clearly how Eagles have so much extra money as so many on D are on rookie contracts.

I studied the chart for quite a while and came to the conclusion that no one way is the best. Drafting well (takes a lot of luck) keeps costs down (initially), but doesn't necessarily build a superior defense. The NY Jets and Tennessee Titans have extraordinary defenses, yet as teams, they suck. It also becomes expensive to keep all the drafted players if they are "superstars" once the contract is up. Also, the chart leaves out Giants' players like Kayvon Thibedeaux, Dru Philips, and newly drafted Darius Alexander (who will definitely be a starter by mid-season, as I believe Nacho will be gone), yet they include newly drafted Carter  :-??

Simply put, an over simplification IMHO...probably put together by an Eagles' fan to make it look they are smarter than all other teams. That'd be my guess
