The first coach I remember, as a fan, was Perkins.  I remember being less than happy when he left the Giants to coach Alabama (replacing the great Bear Bryant).

Sam56

My first coach I remember was Jim Lee Howell (1954-60 53-27-4, .655).

He also won the NFL Title in 1956 and was smart enough to hire and make Vince Lombardi his OC in 1954 (although I am not sure they called it that back then) and shortly after converted Tom Landry from player to defensive coordinator.

He drafted and coached six future NFL Hall of Famers, Sam Huff, Andy Robustelli, Rosey Brown, Emlen Tunnell, Frank Gifford and Don Maynard.

When he finally retired the "Beloved" Allie Sherman took the team's reins.

I remember hearing stories that Lombardi and Landry would spend hours on the chalk board.   Lombardi would draw up offenses and Landry would draw up defensive counter measures and they would go back and forth.  They must have been some of the most impressive coaching BS sessions in history.
