Never watch another Will Farrell movie again. No matter who he ropes into it.

Add Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey to that mix.

Myself, I will never watch any of their movies ever again, no matter who says what about it.

A Sunday evening and my wife and I sat down to watch something. We didn't want to start another series as she is so finicky about what we watch.

We, instead, opted for a movie, and what better movie to try than the one that was Best Picture of the year at this year's Academy Awards?----- "Anora".

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28607951/

I think this movie might have been discussed in another thread but since I blocked whomever was raving about it, I went into this movie basically not knowing anything other than it takes place in Brooklyn mostly in the Brighten Beach area of Coney Island and it won about 5 awards including best picture.

So, let's see if I can briefly give an idea of what this movie is. A young lady ( a hooker) meets the son of a Russian mob boss and he tasks a fancy to her. He makes her his 'special' girl, paying along the way. He lives in this huge mansion in Brighten Beach and after a while asks the lady to marry him. They run off to Vegas to get married. Then the fun starts. When the Russians find out the boss's son married a hooker they flip out and and for about an hour, try to get this marriage annulled, against the wishes of this young lady. I'll save the ending for anyone who wants to watch.

Personally, I felt this movie was done sort of tongue-in-cheek as some parts were sort of hilarious. The 3 Russians were like the Three Stooges in some parts. I don't know if it was meant that way or not, but that's the way it came off to me. Growing up in Brooklyn and knowing how the Russians rule Brighten Beach. I would have expected them to just knock off the lady and throw her into the swamps of Gerrison Beach, but that's not the way these characters behaved.
Overall, I enjoyed it to a degree. If this as the Best Picture of the Year, it must have been a pretty bad year for good movies.

On a side note, the young lady who stars spends a good part of this movie without a wardrobe if you know what I mean and there is so much sex it could qualify as a soft porn flix at times. I mean the young guy she married was 21 and was ready for action any time of the day or night, or both.
If the sex and the enormous amount of cursing doesn't bother you, I would recommend it, as it wasn't bad, just not that good.

I actually liked a couple of Sandler's movies. 50 First Dates was one. Carrey, I didn't shut off The Mask, or Pet Detective. But I agree, most are stupid, but not Will Farrell stupid.

I could never watch Benny Hill. Or most Leslie Nielsen movies. Steve Martin is one I'm on the fence about. Some good some bad. I didn't see the 2006 Pink Panther, but I laughed at the 1963 version of Clouseau played by Peter Sellers.

Martin was Ok as Inspector Clouseau, but when you try and replace a legend like Sellers in the same role, you can never succeed. Anyway, the movie was a basic flop, never to be made again.

But, for some reason, Doris and I LOVE Benny Hill. Especially if you can ever see the uncensored version.

As a kid, I learned a lot about wit, nuance, and double entendre from watching Benny Hill and Leslie Nielsen. I thought Benny was a hilarious genius!

Leslie Nielsen was the King of...the master of slap stick comedy, something Jim Carrey and Will Farrell did not master. Although, there's some one-liners made by Carrey that still make me burst out laughing, even though he's "over the top" and "over acting" (like Farrell)

One of my favorite of his was in Pet Detective

Louis, "how would you like me to make your life a living hell?"
Ace Ventura, "well, thank you Louis, but I'm already in a relationship"

And of course, the ole, "sooo, you're telling me there's a chance", lol
The fact that Keith Richards has outlived Richard Simmons, sure makes me question this whole, "healthy eating and exercise" thing

Lenny, Lenny, Lenny. Don't tell me you dislike Nielson  :what:

He was the best deadpan comic since Bob Newhart, and was the master of self-deprecating humor. And not everyone is a fan of slapstick comedy, but it has a place in the world of laughs...IMO. Like Newhart, a comedic legend that can't be replicated in the future. Both "one of a kinds"

This one scene is about as close as "Who's on First", and I know you were a fan of Abbott and Costello

He was also the master of "toilet humor" mixed in with self-deprecation, as in the SNL monologue

And of course his hidden fart machine/noise-maker

No, No No, I really like Leslie, it was the Carrey reference I was referring to. I simply cannopt stand him of his humor. But if you do, that's what I meant.

Oh gotcha. I'm no fan of Carrey or Farrell and I find "stupidity as humor", a type of comedy that doesn't excite me, and those two have it in spades. But I'm not unaware of a few lines that make me laugh

On the other hand, I love deadpan humor, especially in comedies where the lead is the "straight", as in deadpan, while surrounded by less than genius characters. No one did it better than Newhart, who could keep a straight face whilst dealing with subpar individuals

I know some people will laugh at me, but I've enjoyed "Resident Alien" on Netflix as much as any show I've watched in a long time. Actors are top-notch at their craft, and the setting is perfect. But the storyline unfolds over time, bringing new intrigue and more mystery to the fate of earth. The interaction between the women in the show is worth watching just for that. There are laugh-out-loud spots, but it's a drama with an unfolding mystery that gets continually more intriguing with each episode. I've actually watched the entire series twice, and I never do that. I found a ton of things I missed the first time through, because I wasn't aware of where the story was going, missing clues and insinuations that in hindsight, are great. The last episode is the most intriguing hook I've ever seen in a show, to get fans to look forward to season 4 dropping

A funny scene. Harry (the alien transformed to human form as a physician who learns how to doctor patients using Google), learns how to speak in English (mostly by watching continual reruns of "Law and Order"), but doesn't understand street vernacular, yet. In this scene, he was called a douchebag by some kid and thinks it's a compliment. So he looks it up later

Since I last updated here I finished up watching Dead Still, of which wikipedia says, "Dead Still follows Brock Blennerhasset, a well regarded photographer in 1880s Ireland who specialises in memorial portraiture – photographing the recently deceased – as he is drawn into a series of murders which appear to be linked to his work." It was ok, the acting was fine but the storyline was just so-so.

Also finished up watching Short Film Showcase. It was made up of movie shorts, I think each were under 25 minutes long. Many were highly regarded, with several in the running for an Academy Award for best live action short film. Depending on the particular "short" they ranged from meh to excellent.

Canal Boat Diaries is a series I'd mentioned before that I absolutely love for the serene landscape and show's slow pacing. It does the blood pressure good. Acorn was only streaming seasons 1,3 and 4 but not the second season for some reason. Well, a week or so ago they finally dropped season 2, so I watched that season right away. No chase scenes, no violence or bloodshed, just quiet canal exploration. A young man living on his narrowboat, exploring the hundreds of miles of England's canal system, which 150-200 years ago was built and used for hauling industrial goods and supplies, but is mostly used now for recreational purpose.
If anyone is at all interested in this I found an episode on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXIOm-KBrBw

I took this surreal screen capture of a bridge built linking two canals as it passes over a road below.

Lastly, I just finished watching season 1 of Hidden Assets, which I found much more enjoyable than season two of The Night Agent by the way. The former is a Canadian/Belgian/Irish production with lots of twists and turns as it play out. A race against time to thwart a bombing in Belgium by a Syrian terrorist ring (or is it?). So far Acorn only has the one season, but I see it also streams on Roku Channel, Prime Video, and AppleTV, so maybe I can continue with season 2 on another provider.
*Just noticed Acorn now has the 2nd season available to stream. I could swear it wasn't there yesterday.

I was, and still am, a huge fan of Yellowstone. I waited patiently for the final half of season 5 to come on, only for it to be on a subscription channel that I didn't have. Yesterday I saw a blurb that the entire series is on Peacock (where it always has been). I went to this channel, and there it was, the second half of season 5. I am now watching the final episodes and will enjoy it to no end.

Lenn,

Given how much you like Yellowstone, once you're done with it, you should check out the prequel shows (to Yellowstone) that focus on the Dutton family in earlier time periods. Both "1883" and "1923" are well worth watching. "1923" is in the middle of the second season right now. My wife and I, who both loved Yellowstone, are really enjoying "1923." It is beautifully shot, and it has great acting in it from Harrison Ford, Hellen Mirren, and others.

Already been there, done that, and I LOVED them both. I was going to start the second season of 1923 as I didn't think IO could wait until it all aired before watching. But, since Yellowstone is now her e for me, I'll finish that and then 1923 is next. I will also enjoy that to no end.
