NYT "Connections" Game

I knew the purple category right from my first glance at the puzzle but there were just too many possibilities for it. I recognized that and left it alone for a couple guesses but I couldn't resist with guess number three.

In a situation like that, where you see 5 or more words that work for a category, the best thing to do in my opinion is to just stay away from it and resist the temptation to guess it. I very rarely hit it when I do that. Much better to just patiently try to find other stuff, which will eventually eliminate one or more of those 5-plus words. It's annoying, but if you're going for the best possible outcome I think you have to resist that temptation in those situations. I sometimes don't. I should always.

That's what I do too. Or I'll highlight the four words but hold them while I look at other combinations.
