Thats a big mistake fans often make when looking at FA - "well we could have just signed so and so..."

- maybe we reached out and they werent interested
- maybe we think Burns is a much better player

We cant assume every FA would have signed with us if we went a different route.

I agree with this, and would also add that Burns could simply be a better fit for this defense too, not many factor in schematics, its possible the powers that be thought one fit better than the other too.

You can't just pick a guy on a tier list based on position alone. (This isnt aimed at the quoted post)

I know you were against it Rich. It's too early to make a call on it for me. At the time, I liked the player but was wondering if the Giants would need the Draft capital to trade up for a QB. Turns out they were truly committed to Jones and who knows if that second-rounder would have made a difference to get Drake Maye. No way Daniels was obtainable. However, if NE would have taken the 2 seconds, then the conversation becomes about Maye and Nubin. Overall he's been a pretty solid player and better all around than Thibs who they gave up a 1st rounder for. The salary is very high but they can re-negotiate it after 2026 or cut him.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

There is more than 75% of the season left.  If Burns continues on his current track I think everyone on this board will be disappointed.

I hope he improves as the season goes forward so it's not group disappointment at the end...

I was for the Brian Burns trade. Generally I'm not one to like giving up draft capital to then subsequently hand out a max contract, but I felt Burns was young enough and good enough that he could be considered a foundational player for us at a premium position. I was also swayed by the fact that the Rams, clearly not a dumb team, offered two first rounders for him a year prior (I understand that his value was different with an extra year on the rookie deal but still).

Looks like I was probably overly ambitious about how good he'd be. I don't think the book is closed yet though.

It'd be nice to get some sacks here and there but I think the play on the field has been better than the counting stats would indicate.  New team, new system, I think both he and the DC are learning how to best use him and those sacks will eventually come.  It's been a bit of an underwhelming start but I'm not ready to write him off just yet.

Quote from: Ed Vette on March 13, 2024, 09:02:26 AMHe's a top ten DE/Edge. Paired with Thibs and with Dex up the middle, they went from an average to one of the better Lines and with Ojulari they have a solid third and long pass rush. They get four years out of him before he's 30. It's a flat contract that doesn't back load. It a two year out post June 1st and a three year out pre. If the Giants had to move up from the second round to get an Edge, they would have to give up a heck of lot more than a fifth round pick and he's a proven commodity vs a risk.

What's not to like? With some coaching they can improve his Run Defense.

Ed, we could have had Christian Wilkins for around the same money. That move would allowed us to keep our draft picks that were part of the trade with Carolina. With those draft picks we could of had Koo-aid..

Koo-aid and Wilkins  OR  Brian Burns?
The KING is in the building

Actually looking at my vote in this, I voted 4. Which is what the majority of respondents voted. 5 was a razor close second. 97 out of 118 respondents voted either four or five.

In short, Giants fans broadly loved this trade when it happened, as evidenced above.
